I've asked around and got the following quotes from the average man on the street*: Awe inspiring stuff I think you'll agree. *These may or may not be real quotes.
latest news:- Dominion voting systems are suing Rudy Giuliani for $1.3 billion over his false conspiracy theory that the Trump votes were flipped to Biden by these m/c's of which he made numerous claims.
I think this is an epic thread tbh. What’s really unique is that the topic has pretty much been contained to this one thread. Would rather have this than people constantly spinning up new threads on the same thing. If people aren’t interested, move on to the next thread would be my view.
Totally agree. Don’t get the animosity about this thread continuing at all. It’s not like you can’t see what’s been discussed in here no matter how many times it gets put up to the top is it.
You should look at the Cardiff one. Someone had posted Mick s first interview and then posted each point he'd made as a separate topic!
Here's one thing I'm not sure about from Biden. The 2000 dollar relief cheques going to every household. A lot of those families have worked throughout and never lost a cent in wages. Surely the relief money would be better being better directed? Otherwise it sort of looks like a pre election bribe on the part of both parties (Trump wanted it too).
It’s a consequence of ‘small government’ isn’t it. Rather than putting in lots of new and expensive effort to target the money, it’s cheaper to do it across the board. We put in place furlough for employed people (fairly simple but open to abuse). A separate scheme for SME’s based on business rates (which benefitted lots that didn’t need it and missed lots that did). And a separate scheme for the self employed, which again missed a lot of the intended audience for some complex reasons. All tried to keep it simple but in doing so had loopholes. There’s an argument for a UBI based on tax records which is cheap but would benefit lots of mid and high earning employed throughout.
Watched that last night. What did you think of Farage making out Trump had put him on the spot by asking him to speak? Lying get! I thought he was going to jump up and say a few words ad lib style, but he got up there and almost made love to the Orange Hitler - it was cringeworthy
Boris Johnson used to do the same. Act all dumb that he had forgotten which business group he was talking to then coming out with a funny speech. Except he eventually got rumbled.
It's often much more expensive to means test something than it is to just give it to everyone. It also possibly has the benefit of stopping resentment. People who have been furloughed get jealous of people who have worked all the way through and not had the extra worry of financial difficulty and potential redundancy and people who have worked all the way through get jealous of furloughed people who have had almost a year off work on 80% pay whilst they have been out working full time for just 20% extra (that they've probably spent on commuting) and potentially putting their or their familes lives at risk. I'm pretty certain no-one is jealous of those who have lost jobs and had no financial support.
