.. and not wanting to pick on players. Is it the modern game, e.g. crowding the goal line at set pieces, our tactics, coaching methods, size and stature of our team, or the goalkeepers and defenders tactically at fault? Yet again we have conceded from close range and within the 6 yard box from a set piece . From corners and free kicks we seem to be exceptionally vulnerable in those situations with either our goalkeepers. I regularly see lots of 'flapping and missing' from our keepers when corners or set piece crosses come into the 6 yard box and yet we rarely score from them in similar situations. (albeit Woodrow had one on the goal line disallowed last night for a foul I could not see given the keeper fumbled it) Genuinely, as a tactical numpty regarding footie, I do not know what the problem or solution is. Any ideas?
Big Val needs to seriously sort this out, either man on each post or our men round keeper to protect him,if we have a man on each post think the keepers starting position can be a yard off his line instead of being stuck on his line, sometimes seen Walton actually behind his line at corners
As @red24/7 says, our keepers aren’t the best at commanding the area. Opposition managers will know that and load the six yard box at every opportunity. Our defenders should start and take a bit more responsibility though. Easy to jump on the keepers back, but the opposition are usually unchallenged at set pieces. There seemed to be a lot comments on here last night about Cardiff’s second goal. Not sure why, because nobody even challenged Collins.
Nobody moaned about a challenge on Collins. There wasn’t one. The two handed shove on Sibbick was the thing I saw and take issue with, as I’ve written on the main match thread.
To be fair De Gea , one of the worlds top keepers, conceded a similar goal last night against Sheffield Utd
Im trying to understand what has changed end of last season and start of this we kept plenty of clean sheets up to the last one when we played Forest in November, since then we have conceded every single (league) game - almost always from set pieces. Is it just others have figured us out or have we got worse.
I think with set pieces it's more a case of teams figuring us out. We have young goalkeepers that don't command the area, and a zonal marking system that seems to fall apart whenever a forward makes a move across the box, or the opponent puts multiple players in one "zone". We also have everyone back, which means once we've defended the set piece, we still have to defend the next ball in, which is what happened with the first goal last night. On the goalkeepers, we have two young goalkeepers, who are both developing. They are probably 10 years from their peak years. Unfortunately, they don't have the benefit of an experienced player playing alongside them that the likes of Mads has.
If the referee is going to be consistent, then our disallowed goal would suggest that the two handed shove on Sibbick should've been a penalty to them
Just seen it. Man United players jumped for it though. At the other end, Ramsdale doesn't appear to be much better than our two!!
It's an organisational thing. For the equaliser, there were three of our players in the vicinity of Moore - 6, 20, and another one, and he beat them all. We needed to stop the ball getting to him in the first place, because a two-metre tall striker is going to outjump even big central defenders. How you stop it reaching him, I don't know. But Moore is a one-off in terms of his size. Our defenders won't - or shouldn't - be outjumped by too many. If they are being outjumped in a way I don't believe they are, then we need to set up differently.
Hard to be on the post when you've just been shoved in the back. If that 2nd goal was shown to var it gets disallowed clear shove.
Helik should have been on Moore simple as that , regardless if what system Val wants to play defending corners common sense sometimes has to prevail , sibbick marking there tallest player is not good enough and the analyst team should have worked out the best man to mark him
We dont set up with em on the post though, neither do we have players up field, we need to clear out the box of 2 many bodies and playing 2 on haif way line would fetch opponents out to cover. We tend to create our own headaches in this department. Last 3 managers have packed our own box.
Personally I’d like us to leave at least 2 if not 3 of our players on the half way line and give them something to think about.Less players in our box, easier for the keeper to come out and catch or punch clear and a greater chance of a counter attack.
Three players were stood by Moore at the back stick for that second goal. Not one of them made an effort to challenge for the ball. They were probably all leaving it to each other.....
