Ideally looking for i5 or i7 (latest gen within budget), 16Gb RAM, 350+ GB SSD, Win10. Not for gaming so graphics not essential. Just box needed have peripherals.

Have to convince my wife it's ok to buy it, so budget limited.

I rarely buy second hand, so I'm not sure who's reputable and who's not out there.

As close to £200 as possible, £250 at a push. It'll be used to interface with an external sound card (USB) for music production. I've other storage options for recorded media, so the on-board drive is for OS, and ~120Gb in apps.

I bought a Microsoft certified refurbished one via one of the Amazon sellers a while back (2018) and haven't had any issues with it. i5 quad-core, 8GB, 500GB non-SSD cost £180 at the time. The only potential issue it it will be in an old style desktop case.

Just checked back. The seller was MicroDream Ltd. No problems with their service at all.

Think your pushing it a bit for those specs at that price Pete.

I've seen a few in budget, but I'm unfamiliar with the companies.

Tier One online is the one I've used for a few years. Laptops graded by condition and B upwards are in really good nick. I think COVID has stocked back stock levels but there is still a decent choice. Prices seemingly a bit higher than Amazon.

Are there any decent auction houses that sell off ex-lease office PCs near Barnsley? I pick up older HP desktops and workstations all the time from a local one here. I'm writing this on a forty quid ex-police HP Z400. I subsequently upgraded it to 6 core 24GB for next to nowt (thanks Chinese ebay) too.

This is the nearest to what I mean that I found in Britain but admittedly I didn't look very hard. The stock looks a bit disappointing but maybe COVID is to answer there. There must be a way to get hold of all that ex-lease office stock somehow. Where does it all go?

    Pressed buy on this

Windows 10 HP 800 G1 SFF Intel Core i5-4570 Desktop PC Computer - 16GB DDR3-480GB SSD, £216, I'm happy with that. I don't game and it's got two graphics ports for my monitors, no upgrade potential, but I don't upgrade, well I'd possibly double the RAM if only 2 of the 4 slots are in use.

That's at least 2 generations old, maybe 3. Actually it's 6 gens old. They are 10th gen now.

Yes, when using multiple 'inserts' in music software it's RAM intensive.

It's more obvious with the refurb laptops, where they're typically the old IBM Thinkpad cases with the scratchy red mouse thing in the middle of the keyboard, but they're refurbishing old machines with updated tech. In my case, I was using it with a dual screen monitor setup and I had to buy an adaptor get the connector on the second monitor to work with one of the available display ports, as I had to use the VGA port (the old style one that you used to have screws to attach it) on one of them.

I'd suggest getting somone to build you one but price of some of the components have gone through the roof

Personally wouldn't worry about the generation of chipset. Went from an i7 2600k to an i7 10th generation CPU and there is very little performance difference. Lower power consumption but nowt much for normal use.
