If we're talking ice staking then I'd argue that John Curry's achievements at least match or even surpass Torvill and Dean.

Maybe so, but their Bolero routine was outstanding.

I must revisit this post and remark upon how unrelated to my request for best British sporting performance it is.

    German for a start.

Nothing sporting about what happened to him - poor bloke was nearly decapitated by an assault (not a challenge)

No records were broken (I accept his neck was )

Same equipment many other drivers would most likely have achieved the same.

I refuse to play your game because for me the ultimate sporting achievement is to take on your opponent and triumph.
I’m bias as I passionately think cricket is the ultimate sport - for that reason I’m with Plobby - Ben Stokes at Headingley.
    Sorry OP!!!

If you want to argue cricketing achievements then you go no further than Botham.

But I'm asking for British man against himself, against the world, against whatever's been done before, on this thread

Leicester has got to take some beating as a sporting triumph.
Some might argue it’s a team game and affected by the other team, but I would counter with it was over a whole season not one day/event.

I agree, it was a great routine and I can remember being glued to the television with my parents watching it. However, Curry edges it for me as he predated T&D plus his achievement was as an individual and in a more difficult discipline (figure skating as opposed to ice dancing). However, both reinvented the disciplines in which they performed and both should be celebrated.

I reckon Murray would laugh in your face if you told him his victory was for Britain. Also aren’t they identified as English on the Tour de France?

Tyson Fury outclassing a 10 year reigning champion Wladimir Klitschko. The victory alone was some feat but to go to Germany and do it in the champions back garden was something else. To comfortably win on points even after having a point removed himself was special.

Not far away from that victory is probably the stoppage of Wilder in early 2020, after battling all the out of ring issues he had. Ballooning to 30 stone and still coming back and stopping a reining champion is special.

No matter what you think of the man he’s some athlete. A British sporting great.

Using Gegenpresser's criteria, that if anyone else was within 25 miles of said achievement then it didn't count, I would say Edmund Hillary climbing Everest in 1947.

Although you could argue that it was a piece of piss because he had a big coat on
