yeah I've got all my records and cds catalogued in discogs. recently added a CD player to my hifi setup, as I just can't afford to buy all the records I want. the quality is stunning and CDs are insanely cheap. I've got Apple Music as well, but I want something tangible that I can share with my boy as he grows up.
No it's not. Streaming and cloud storage causes unnecessary carbon emission. Download the stuff you really want and store it locally.
It depends on how much music you have. I’ve ripped hundreds of CD’s to a Network Attached Storage device (NAS) using a piece of free software called EAC. It tags the tracks automatically and allows you to add the artwork. It’s a labour of love though - took quite a long time! As others have said, don’t just dispose of your CD’s - if only because you have back-up if anything goes wrong with your storage method. In addition, certain CD’s are appreciating in value quite markedly. I personally find the streaming experience unsatisfactory somehow, although I do have a Qobuz subscription. I can recommend Radio Paradise if you like streaming though-fantastic internet station. Well worth checking out.
I'm fancying a new turntable, probably something more style over substance, anyone got any recommendations?
Depends on your budget but I wouldn’t look further than Rega tbh. Class leaders at every price point (until you get to silly money Linn territory)
The data centres for cloud services are colossal, which means a phenomenal amount of energy is required to power them.
One rack of storage is like 11 kettles constantly boiling. Each server room has dozens of racks and there are hundreds of server rooms just in the UK. Then you've got the power required to maintain the physical networks. If you look at the carbon footprint of the music industry, there was a huge step-change when CDs replaced vinyl, but that was dwarfed by the one which came with streaming. Obviously the carbon footprint of streaming video is orders of magnitude higher than music. I'm trying to reduce my use of streamed content.
