Redders. It’s not even questionable for me Not saying I didn’t like Hourihanne. I’d have him back in a heartbeat. I genuinely believe it was Hammill who boosted his confidence/talent as a player. allowing him the freedom to play.
If we are lucky another Redders or Conor may come along in the future. Aliens will land before we ever get another Ronnie Glavin.
Redfearn he encompassed everything we are as a community and a club. Conor is a quality player and very much missed but Redfearn is just different level in terms of his impact. Redfearn v Glavin would be a more interesting match up.
Neil Redfearn for me. I like Connor but Neil could knock 'em in from all over the pitch and did so for a good numbers of years. He was a good tackler and passer of the ball.
Redfearn, simply due to sheer weight of evidence. However, both Hourihane and Hammill deserve their rightful places as BFC legends and both will always be remembered as shining lights in the club’s history, forever. I can’t imagine anyone surpassing Redfearn (and Glavin) but neither has anyone come as close in the last 20 years as Conor and Adam have. The game has changed in the last 10-15 years with the main protagonists becoming more transient and detached from the fans. I feel that Hourihane and Hammill are the modern day equivalent of our bygone heroes, but that shouldn’t detract from either of their achievements and status in BFC’s history. I love them both to absolute bits and would love them and welcome them back at Oakwell in some capacity in the future.
Agree, Redfearn versus Hourihane is not even a thing. Redfearn nearly kept us in the top flight on his own.
Redders had it all, scored inside the box and outside with equal ease, penalties and free kicks Genuine box-to-box man-machine, one of the greatest ever Barnsley players.
The best two players in my years watching us but Redders will always have the edge as he was here a lot longer, never played below the top two leagues and got us promoted to the Premier League. I think if we were picking one player per decade for their positions it would be a midfield four of....... 1980s: Glavin 1990s: Redders Noughties: Hignett Tens: Conor
Oh dear. Not saying this to start a Parish Council dust up but, if I had to answer a terrible question like this, it would be Hourihane. Not looking to convert anyone’s opinion but give me a minute. Redders was at Barnsley for a very long time. He had some very average seasons in some bloody awful teams and he looked no more than a journeyman footballer at times. Looking back at the media/ fan views of the time, even in the promotion year there was quite a bit of talk about how he wouldn’t hack it in the Premier League - a surprising amount. In the event...wow! There wasn’t a player at the Club who ‘stepped up’ in the way he did. He looked Premiership class the whole season. And although I wouldn’t quite agree with an earlier poster who said he almost kept us up on his own, I can quite see what he means. Not unreasonably we tend to view the whole of Redder’s time here through the lens of a couple of seasons imo. That’s not quite right. Hourihane was here for a much shorter spell and I thought had an impact from Day 1 (albeit initially in a lower league). He was the focal point of a side that grew from a joke into one that could have taken this Club back into the top division if it wasn’t for some of field short sightedness imo. Overall I wouldn’t ever begin to argue that Redders influence on BFC was by far the greater ( it was) I just think Connor is the better player and he’s now playing in a very average Swansea side, and I think he’ll be the difference which will take them up.
