We've had a couple of games called off for ice and snow in the side streets. Crystal Palace and Norwich spring to mind
I couldn’t believe it was off for a waterlogged pitch. Can’t remember it happening in my 50 odd years of watching. I agree with those who suggest that our owners have the necessary resources to ensure it doesn’t happen again.
Games we have had called off have been for it being dangerous for fans like icey round the area. Think once for frozen pitch Ponty goal mouth but today in part (just part) surely down to poorer pitch this season compared to others.
It's a long, long time since I recall rain having an effect. Back in the 70s (maybe, but hazy as to when) we had a home League Cup tie with Colchester. Before the kick-off there was an incredible deluge that carried on through the first half. By half-time the game was a farce. The players were literally ankle deep in water, the ball punted long would just stop dead instead of bouncing, and a floor pass wouldn't travel more than a couple of yards. The ref announced at half time that he would delay the restart for 20? minutes to allow the ground staff to see what they could do, but the rain just got worse so it was called off. I can't remember ever a game not starting at Oakwell though because of rain. Can anybody?
I understand a new pitch is c.£300k (Leeds were talking about doing this). Last match I recall being called off for waterlogging at Oakwell was in early 80s against Hull. I remember this clearly because at the time I worked in Melton Mowbray. A work mate was from Beverley and a Tigers fan. I drove us from the midlands up for the match but it was called off. It wad Grand National day (so probably late March/April). We had lunch at my mum's in Birdwell and decided to stay to watch the race. We went to put a bet on at a bookie's in Worsborough (there used to be one in a small "hut" there. My work mate was mightily impressed when a fight broke out in the bookies while we were queuing to get our bets on - but this fight was between the two women cashiers behind the grill - classy ! . Hair pulling, falling over, wrestling, name calling etc. After a minute or so a bloke came from the back to separate them as none of the punters could get past the grill - I don't think they ran a book on the fight
Covering the pitch would work or those drive on sponge rollers that they use on waterlogged golf greens.
A few years ago one Tuesday night we were playing Ipswich and for several hours it bucketed down with rain and only a brief inspection was needed to allow the game to go ahead. We won 4-0. The pitch has certainly deteriorated in recent years whether due to neglect or "other circumstances ". I do remember many years ago when it did get into an appalling state and new drainage and undersoil heating was installed. It certainly needs looking into now.
