With you on Cats. Another Lloyd Weber. I neither enjoyed that or Joseph. If they were all in that ALW Style ( talking songs. I think most will understand what I mean by that) I wouldn’t bother I much prefer upbeat stuff. Those with no expectations generally the best. ‘Once’ is fantastic. Blood brothers I mistook when I thought I’d bought tickets for Blues brothers. Our lass went potty when she looked at the tickets. Best mistake I ever made. Our lass agrees btw. Seen it 4 times. Anthony Costa’s (blue) performance was amazing. You’ll enjoy Book of Mormon. Can be seen as offensive by some.( written by South Park creators) But great nonetheless. See it for what it is.
How can you not like Cats? Favourite one live was probably Billy Elliot. I saw the film first and r really wasn't sure about it as a stage production but it was so cleverly done. Most recent one was Everyone's talking about Jamie just before lockdown. Well worth seeing. Favourite Les Miserables purely for the emotional journey you go through each time you watch it. Next one will be The Waitress if we're allowed to go by then.
My wife loves Musicals. I had never been to one until I surprised her with an unforgettable weekend to celebrate our Silver wedding anniversary in 1997. I booked a luxury hotel and two front row tickets to see " Phantom of the Opera". Absolutely fantastic. Since then, we've seen " Mama Mia", " Les Miserable", " We will Rock You", " Lion King", " Billy Elliott" and " Jersey Boys" all in Londons West End and " Mama Mia" in Edinburgh. My wife has at various times travelled down to London with mates to see some other West End productions. She reckons the best live show she has ever attended was that of " Il Divo" at the 02 Arena. Can't recommend attending a show in the West End enough ST. When the pandemic is over, please make a concerted effort to travel down to London to take one in. I guarantee, you will not regret it.
I'm not a big fan of musicals, but was bowled over by, 'Gay! A Gay Musical' back in 2007. Fantastic storyline & acting with brilliant songs including: "I Love Willies" "Hold My Hand (No, That's Not My Hand)" "I'm a Friend of Dorothy" ...way better than the Lloyd Webber stuff.
Seen em all Helen. Just don’t find any ALW musicals to my taste. ( not seen Phantom) our lass likes em. The First time I saw les mis. I was up in the gods and didn’t enjoy it. But on my Bro in laws 50th we got the best seats in the house. Totally different experience. I was blown away. I Agree on Jamie and Billy Elliot. The Billy part probably the most outstanding performance of any show. Nearly in every scene. Whoever plays him earns their coin.
You're right they are barely off stage. When we saw it we knew the lead (didn't know it was going to be his turn) which added to the enjoyment.
When I hear this, it rouses a fervour in me that knows no bounds. I'll willing go battle with all fascists, right wingers and especially Donald Trump & his fans.
My first visit to the West End was memorable ( just) for two reasons. Firstly it was our 25th wedding anniversary and secondly I took around £150 out with me and when the Show had ended we found a nice little bar close to the theatre. My wife had had around five schooners of red wine and I had around eight pints . When we got back to our hotel I counted up to discover I'd got £200 in my wallet and some loose change. Can only think that the rather arrogant barman ( very rude to some customers),who was from Germany I believe, must have had some confusion over British currency and everytime I had gave him a tenner for our drinks, he had given me the extra in the belief I had tendered a £20 note. We visited the Tower of London the next day and apart from my wife being Green round the gills with a hangover and a headache, a good time was enjoyed. We went looking for the bar that same night ( to return the money- honest), but couldn't find it, so reluctantly spent the surplus on more booze.
My can't stand musical is Annie which is annoying to me as it's got a female lead so I want to like it.
I do like ‘Oliver’, the film musical. Privately at home, curtains drawn etc.. Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory too. Technically a musical, I suppose. Grew up with Rocky Horror, so soft spot for that. & I love ‘Once’, as a film about musicians, with some great tunes. & am happy Glen’s earned a few extra bob from it..
Also saw Lion King in Disney ...superb but Jersey Boys on Broadway tops the lot..big mention to Spamalot and Barnum....
We went and saw this with Craig Revel Horwood as Miss Hannigan and despite being ‘forced’ to see-thought it was surprisingly good.
My Mrs loves musical theatre, I surprised her for her birthday with tickets for The Lion King, she also wanted to see Wicked, those two were enough to make me realise they’re not for me.
