CHELSEA FA CUP PREVIEW Match Previews After plenty of unexpected rest, the Reds are finally back in action this week with a fifth round Emirates FA Cup tie against Chelsea next up! Continue reading on the official site...
It'll be a strange game playing on Grove Street. I ent done that since I worra kiddy (I used to live on Cliff Terrace)
Isn't the stadium on Grove Street? With "Oakwell's playing surface" referenced in the same paragraph?
To be fair their team bus will be travelling along Grove St to reach Oakwell so the statement isn’t wrong as such.
Which is on Grove Street. So the Chelsea team will indeed arrive on Grove Street, then pull into the stadium, Oakwell.
It isn’t wrong at all. Just as I used to walk down Wembley Way to get to Wembley. Or up Shoreham Street to get to Bramall Lane if you’re a blade. Possibly down Fulham Road to get to Stamford Bridge. And so on.
Just over the last 12 months or so there are more references to Grove Street than to Oakwell from the club . Any particular reason why?
Can we just refer to it as Oakwell? We don't need a satnav guide. We know Oakwell is on Grove Street. Chelsea are coming to play at Oakwell.
Would seem a bit odd if the equivalent piece for the Blades was "Chelsea arrive on Shoreham Street for an 8pm kickoff!"
That's completely untrue. Unless you can provide evidence to back that up? The stadium is called Oakwell. Always has been, always will be. And is referred to incessantly. The only time Grove Street is referred to is when referencing the matchday programme (Grove Street) or occasionally in such articles as this one, when referring to 'us' on a number of occasions. For example. Were I doing an article on Valérien Ismaël I wouldn't constantly throughout the article call him Valérien Ismaël. I'd refer to him as the Frenchman, Gaffer, the boss, the Head Coach, the 45-year-old and so on. It's just standard practice.
Most of my life going to Oakwell I can honestly say on most occasions I’ve never touched Grove Street to gain entry into or out of Oakwell . It’s a bit mystifying imo why the sudden clamour to use Grove Street tbh , I’m well aware the the official correspondence to the club used Grove street etc for many years but to the fans both Home and Away have always mostly referenced our Home as Oakwell . I can understand using Grove Street as a relaunch for a new drive for the programme sales etc but there seems to be a clamour and desire to not reference the ground name as Oakwell and use every opportunity to change it . If I’m honest I’m a bit suspect of this and it may be unfounded but that’s how I feel .
All the Grove Street nonsense started around the same time our owners were in dispute about the stadium.
Whitey, I'd hope that my past posts demonstrate a great respect and appreciation for what you do and that I'm not one to moan at the club. This isn't even a moan but there are strong rumours of the club looking at ground sharing elsewhere. They may be totally unfounded but they're out there. It's also been the perception on here with me included that there have been more references to the ground using Grove Street. This may all be, and probably is, entirely unconnected but given the rumours it just dangles the possibility that the Oakwell brand is being diluted. If I had to say so I'd say that's not the case but until the rumours of moving out of town are well and truly quashed people will remain touchy.
