Why did he leave Barnsley? I had just started watching the reds when he played, and he seemed a fans favourite and was almost scoring 1 in 2 although didn’t seem a regular starter.
I'll have to check later, but didn't Tommy score something like 10 or 11 goals in his first dozen appearances, in the Division 4 promotion season. Then he got injured in the first game in Division 3 at home to Sheff Wednesday, and didn't really recover. He didn't come back the same player, put it that way and only played a handful more games
He still lives on Barnsley, his son married one of my mates daughters also with the second name Graham.
Loved Tommy Graham in that 78/79 promotion season. Think we signed him from Villa? Scored for fun in his first few games and fairly regularly throughout. In tandem with Derek Bell they fired us to promotion. Clarkey bagged a few too of course....
Was playing up front when I first started going. Aldershot at home. 2-0. Own goal & a twice taken Derek Bell penalty first half. Tommy was fast & chased everything for 90 minutes. I remember sprinting up Belgrave all the way to bus station after. Wish I could do that now..
sorry typo I race pigeons and two years ago i had one reported in Wales It was Tommy Graham. i arranged to meet him at a hotel near Manchester Airport and collected it off him. so he was then living in Wales
If memory serves me right there was a smallish piece on one of national papers. Apparently Bell had assaulted his missus during an argument. He may have still been with us or just moved on.
Tommy still lives in Ardsley in the house he bought when he moved to Barnsley. Shows the difference these days, a semi detached up Ardsley has been replaced by a barn conversion in Holmfirth or Leeds. Dont think Tommy was offered a new contract hence his move to Halifax where I remember him scoring a cracking header for us in a 1-1 draw in our promotion season.
Back in the days when players seemed to finish their careers with lower league clubs and then bought a pub
Sorry Simon - we won 2-0 at The Shay that year. Tommy scored the first goal. The other was a Derek Bell penalty, after Glyn Riley was “fouled”. Knew how to win penalties did Glyn before it became fashionable like now.
I’m sure he came to work for us at Costcutters warehouse in late 80s think he was a agency driver at the time really nice bloke from what I can remember.
Thanks for that, I'd always got it in my head he scored the equaliser. Just shows how your memory goes with age
