Rotherham and Wednesday's games both off due to frozen pitches.

Sheffield Wednesday's match at the dilapidated Hillsborough stadium, scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.

I live fairly close to Hillsborough, and it has been absolutely baltic all week. The snow from Monday has barely shifted from our driveway.

They have under soil heating. Just flick the switch.

Bit surprised both have been called off so early. Also surprised that Rotherham's newish ground doesn't have undersoil heating- assuming it must not anyway!

I recall when we had a game called off a while ago due to a frozen pitch, that there's much more to it than just turning the undersoil heating on, and you can usually tell the day before the game whether the pitch will be ready in time.

Flicking the switch so to speak, at the wrong time, runs the risk of water logging it. Probably easier (and cheaper) to postpone the game the day before.

Yeah not particularly criticising the decision mate, more surprised but that's more due to me not knowing the ins and outs of keeping a pitch playable in winter. I assumed undersoil would just thaw it but didn't consider whether that would waterlog it etc.

Agree if you flicked the switch now waterlogging could be a possibility. But it's been Baltic since Sunday, Oakwell will have had the U.S.H on since the weekend to get last night's game on....Wednesday are skint.

Any club who call a game off for a frozen pitch when they have undersoil heating should be fined as it looks very shady like they want it off.

    Oh yeah I know.

I don't recall exactly how it works, but I just remember something at the time of one of our games being called off, that there's certain times you can and can't use it.

    Or sumat

Sounds a bit rude that Helen if you don't mind me saying. And dangerous too unless it's in a Tommy Tippee Sippy plastic beaker or summat.
