Yes. It's a slap in the face to everyone who lost their jobs that bin crews (who worked in the open air away from people) in a secure job get honoured

Ok. You keep up with your two or three word posts, you're doing fantastically. Why don't you actually post an opinion one day instead of just little digs.

I don't think it's right to select a few people for honours with a statue and ignore the sacrifices made by everyone else impacted.

 

Nothing wrong with refuse collectors being honoured but don’t put bin crew,I find that insulting,SuperTyke probably means where is the memorial for people who had to live on no money and the stress they suffered ,the memorial should be something that looks to future with words like “look forward to the future with thanks to all who suffered and sacrificed in the pandemic”, a white dove or new birth something positive

 

I posted an opinion. You indeed replied. This is a memorial to all those seen as worthy of a mention. You dismissed it out of hand. Why don’t you put up a real argument instead of picking up in 1 section of the workforce. You certainly don’t like criticism. As for little digs. It’s all that was needed. Sometimes it’s straight to the point instead of waffling.

 

Then the criteria the out of touch council has selected for who is worthy is a slap in the face to so many

 

Spending thousands on a bronze statue whilst In the middle of a pandemic ,that’s seeing many people out of work and businesses closing, and strains on council budgets, seems to me like the wrong thing to do...

 

I think the council will use the guidelines of what are classed as key workers plus all the critical workers. Key workers are those that have to work through a pandemic. Utility workers. Carers. Etc. (Shall we dump all our rubbish in the streets). The council don’t set those rules. (You’re criticising the council. When it’s not necessary. Write to em if you feel it’s necessary.)

 

Especially when it specifically excludes private sector adults of working age and specifically excludes those who lost their jobs

A teacher
A police officer
A nurse
A carer
A volunteer


Where's the pub landlord who's done his bit by losing his livelihood?
Where's the barmaid who will be evicted in a few months because she can't pay her rent anymore?
Where's the shopworker?

 

They're strange guidelines that list ambulance drivers AND NHS workers separately

Landlord= His =male, Barmaid= Her=female.
Just to add to this debate National and local Govt staff, have all too frequently been omitted from mentions in key workers. Johnson in his address to the Nation in the Summer mentioned loads of occupations but neglected to include the Civil Service such as DWP who kept the benefits flowing , the HMRC who kept on collecting the taxes.

And that's the problem with specifically mentioning people's jobs as worthy. You will miss some out.

Also I chose landlord and barmaid specifically to include both genders (don't even go there ) but they were just random mainly because the first person I thought of was Al Murray the pub landlord.

 

I don’t know if that’s a reply to me, but I never said it was. However, if you’re PrimeMinister and you’re giving your thanks to key workers then at least acknowledge your own National and Local Govt workers.

 

I agree, just lightheartedly pointing out you left yourself a little open there. As for not mentioning the Civil Service etc, that was more than a bit remiss of Johnson, I believe it was a political point, but that’s another discussion.

 

Can't see why some people are getting their knickers in a twist over this. Either way. In the big scheme of things its not the biggest deal in the world. The council made a decision for what seems like genuine reasons. The council can be criticised for timing, location and style of statue. But is it worth getting pissed off about really? I don't think so. I'll sleep tonight.

It’s a memorial/dedication . Focussed on those who’ve lost their lives and dedicated critical and key workers.

The fact people have lost jobs. Which is a great tragedy in all this. Is acknowledged in the way the council and other support services. Try to help. I don’t see where it fits in a Monument. If you think it does the write to the council.
Who knows what’s going to be added to the sculpture. But I guess anything can be added at this stage.
But remember. A line usually has to be drawn. (Should it be just Man/Woman/child) I’m more than happy for it to include anyone. But that is not what it’s about. The text on the plinth will be interesting.
