I think it's because they have no bias and don't get caught up in the history of the clubs they work for. He wouldn't admit it but I'm sure Val couldn't give two f ooks that we missed out on Play-offs in 88/89, 90/91 and 94/95 and blew promotion in 99/00. Where as a U.K based coach would feel that pressure the weight of history gives clubs like Barnsley. I know we haven't challenged for a few years but the first time we do it will be brought back up by the media looking for an angle.
How many English managers have even won a trophy since the Premier League started? Can think of Royle, Redknapp and Maclaren. Guessing there'll be more league cup winners, but not so sure about FA Cup, and certainly no PL winners.

He's a good name to throw into the mix. Accepted as a decent gaffer despite the trophy-less years, but I wonder if his knowledge and style was influenced by his desire to put a shift in abroad? Maybe some English gaffers could follow his lead, and indeed that of young English players in getting to know the wider game outside the comfort zone of the domestic leagues?
Hodgson did it, made his name in Sweden where he completely changed the style of play in their leagues.
