Was so convinced we were going to lose the replay after the injustice of being denied a stonewall penalty, but so glad I got to see us upset Manure twice!!
Can’t really remember that feeling in the instant that Schmeichel sliced the ball across Hendrie’s path. I suppose it was one of those “can’t believe he did that” thoughts but John will never get there. But he did. The little legs pumped away to beat defender and keeper to the ball and 10,000 or so Reds fans erupted. There have not been many days like that in my time following Barnsley but that has to be right up near the top of the list. It was a 300+ mile journey for me that day, and the same for the replay, but it was a real privilege to witness those two games.
When I got there, i thought I had one of the crappest seats in the house. Front row, right behind the net. Super John altered that opinion! Could see bugger all else mind you! Though the cameraman behind that goal did turn round to us and share it was a nailed on penalty at the other end when Neville took Liddell knee high.
A great day out and I appear on the clip on 16 seconds looking quite exuberant! I’ve had some of the best days of my life following our club.
The most clear cut penalty never given. Mike Riley was such a bottler. An even worse ref was to come in the quarter final.
We’re not entitled to a good referee. There’s something written in the FA constitution to that effect
And to think Mr Riley is the Head of PGMOL. The professional referees top boss and was one of the worst refs of the last 20 years. Unless you were a man United fan he loved reffing at old Trafford
I was sat in the home end next to the Stretford End with a mate who was a ManU season ticket holder, how I managed to keep a lid on it I'll never know!!!
Correct!Even Andy Grey commenting said it was a blatant penalty. It still rankles with me enmven now. Daren't give a pen against Man U at Old Trafford,Ferguson would have gone ballastic. I still wonder if he didn't rule super John offside in the replay. Good job we fans behind the net sucked the ball in and the collective sigh of relief when those little legs made it to the ball and slotted it in. Magic!
