I found it quite disrespectful, maybe they should be beating us with the money they have spunked but there best chance was andersons header back apart from that collins didn't have a thing to do and 1 nil flattered them, so to come out after and say we should be beating teams like barnsley when if we were still playing now they wouldn't have scored I find disrespectful.

But the ‘likes of’ is easily just a phrase for teams in and around you?

I would almost guarantee that both of us have said ‘we need to beat teams like Wigan to stay up’ or something similar. The reason the phrase has taken a disrespectful angle on Twitter is because opposition fans use it in a derogatory sense. The player didn’t do that here at all in my opinion.

Have you watched the whole interview? He didn’t say they ‘should’ be beating us, he was basically saying if they’d kept a clean sheet it would still have been 0-0 as they offered nothing going forward. And that 0-0 still isn’t a good enough result.

They’re a team with aspirations of the playoffs (rightly or wrongly). They absolutely need to beating teams like us at home if they want to achieve that. Just like we need to be beating a whole host of teams like the ones we’ve got coming up if we have playoff aspirations.

No he probably wouldn’t, because they’re teams fighting for automatic promotion and the title where as we’re in that middle pack chasing. Doesn’t make it a sign of disrespect - I’m sure we’d all agree that the most successful seasons tend to come when you’re really consistent in taking points off the teams you’re in direct competition with.

I most certainly would not have said need to beat "the likes of" Wigan. Just we need to beat Wigan.

That's the last from me on this matter Loko

I watched all the interview He said after a game where the could bearly get out of there own half "if they don't score its 0-0 which still isn't good enough against teams like barnsley" so in other words he is saying they should be beating us.

Exactly. Still struggling to see the disrespect. He's admitted they couldn't get out of their own half, even made a joke about the fact you can't score from set pieces if you don't get any, and there's nothing wrong from thinking that 0-0 still isn't a great result at home to a team between 8th and 16th. He's essentially saying without the conceded goal they wouldn't have lost - but that isn't cause for celebration. Those three words don't infer that he thinks they 'should' be beating us, but that they have to be aiming to. All down to interpretation I guess, but the outrage in certain circles is misplaced for me.

There's a difference between you saying it to your mate, and a professional footballer saying it in a media interview.

What you say to your mate has - with respect - zero consequence to anyone involved in professional football. (And it's the same when I say similar things to my mate, or post things on here.)

Those involved in professional football should be more careful with their choice of words. If you want to intentionally belittle your opponent, select the words which do that. And if you don't want to belittle them, there are lots of other words you can use.

As with Tyke_67, I'm also now done on this thread. Similar to the innumerable Brexit discussions, nobody's perspective ever budges a millimetre, and there ain't no point going around in circles.

Then why didn't he just say we needed to beat Barnsley. "Teams like..." is a slur and thus disrespectful.

I think your last bit is what we/ they should say, haven't got a issue with that at all, imagine Leicester saying " we need to beat teams like Liverpool to make sure we get top 4" afterall Liverpool are not doing well at all this season.
