If we get promoted would you like the club to pay £10m for Dike or any other player for that matter? Ie smash our transfer and wage structure. Would Val, the players and board get stick from the BBS if we were bottom 3 all season in the Premier league?
No, I'd want us to make some sensible signings, a bit of experience (like 25-27 year olds), maybe one in 30s with Prem experience, probably in midfield, and the rest following our current recruitment process, just even higher calibre ones. Would fully expect to finish in the bottom 3, would want Val to stay but expect him to leave upon relegation. As long as we didn't lose every week like the Blunts did for months, and got maybe 25+ points, I'd take it and be happy we'd have stronger finances for a few years.
The PL if it happens is a 100 million quid thing right. So it smashes our 'structure' just by happening. Imo I think the '1.5 million' is closer to ten for Dike, even if for that we don't get his other rights. I imagine there are targets out there- in case we do, but I bet he is one of them.
Pie in the sky. I don't know why people can't take a back seat 20 years ago I thought we only had to beat Sheff Utd and Port Vale. It's easy to forget we foo ked up against Swindon, Bolton and West Brom too. Amazing how the mind works.
If we somehow manage to do it, which obviously is still significant odds against, we're so far off ready to compete week after week at that level. If we spunked a load of money on expensive players and big wages, only to be relegated anyway, we could end up in a mess. Rather have a sensible go, with then a squad and resources which mean we'd likely threaten again if we came down. Most likely hypothetical anyway, I'll put more thought into it if it actually happens
No way could we compete week in week out without some experienced players. And I think if the board didn't back Val going up could have us tumbling back to league 1. Even if they did back him it will be a massive struggle. But I hope we'd back the team and players like we did the first time we went up if they gave their all like they did then.
Like last time it would only be an excursion. Personally I would keep the same squad, reward them for their efforts obviously but keep a close eye on the extra income and, with the parachute money enhance the ground. The west stand, dear as it is to me and others doesn’t really have a place at Oakwell these days. Contrary to many opinions sure, but it’s probably considered dangerous these days.
I can understand people getting carried away with it being so long since we’ve sniffed a top half finish, but in my heart of hearts, i think getting promoted now could be disastrous. No way are we ready administratively for such a thing, nor are we on the pitch. You’d have the choice of completely altering structure, or taking it on the chin that you’re going to get the worst points tally. My dreams at the minute are more grounded in that the ‘owners’ pay fully for the club and that we stop hoofing it as much. I’d gladly take those over a season in the league of cheating and corruption.
