Who was that? Mr Banham? He arrived at the school a few years after I left but I played 5 a side against him once and he was on a team called “owlstalk” so that kind of gave it away.

Mr Sylvester (Sylvo) was a big blades fan if I’m remembering correctly?

Having lived in Hoyland Common for a few years and now currently in Hoyland, I’d say there’s quite a few here. Well, more than I’d like. (Although what I’d like is zero).

They do seem a bit more obnoxious than the fans that are from/live in Sheffield. But I’m probably generalising a bit there.

Either way, I don’t want to be seeing any striped football tops in the local area unless it’s one of our away tops!

Excuse my ignorance , probably a senior thing but what exactly is a midweeker fan from Barnsley ? is it someone who only attends mid week games , or am I missing something ? Genuine question

Thanks Marlon, never heard that term before but we got there ! lol . They have always been the Fowls or the Wendies to me & in our local we always used to refer to them as the slugs, because the crest on their shirt looked more like a slug than an owl but that was just our local name for them

To be fair, there’s not many about in Hoyland at the minute... at least not wearing that rag of a shirt like there usually is. (Can’t think why..)

Last time I saw one was a Saturday early on in the season I believe. I’m sure they’ll all be out when they aren’t ***** again, whenever that will be!

It would have been around 2011/12, but I don't know who the teacher was. I'm not sure who from the Club phoned him. It was either Wayne Bullimore (football in the Community) or Ronnie Branson (Academy).

Are we talking players or fans here George. Plenty of fans still abart Hoyland. Not as many as pre 1980’s. Granted. And didn’t Wendy have junior/nursery sides in Hoyland before the magpies set up.? Not sure when they disbanded.

Obviously I am an expert in this subject. I live amongst them. Most of the Wednesday fans I know are sound - because they are nice people (and that's why I know them, if you get my drift).

However, they are a different breed when it comes to play offs/ upturns. Where other clubs' fans would have a level of modesty/ realism, the Wednesday fans just go into overdrive.

Yes, all clubs have their glory supporters, but blimey I've never seen so many crawl out of the woodwork when they finally got to Wembley. Safe to say 99% are not bothered now.

The other thing is that in the same way that there are Wednesday fans in Hoyland, there are loads of Barnsley fans in North Sheffield. Two houses on our street, tons in the vicinity! This seems to be lost on them. It's almost as if when Wednesday fans are born, they get a chip which says, "just be arrogant about support, without any substance". Classic example Wembley V Hull City - the best support Wembley has ever seen, apparently. Because no other club has ever filled their Wembley allocation plus a few more tickets? Because no other club has ever had fans singing their hearts out? The reality is, that was Wednesday's only Wembley trip in absolute ages. They were bound to get a bit over excited.
