My MOTM tonight. Controversial in a 3-1 win? No, he allowed us to play the high line & saved us at times.
Mine too. I love it. I also think his play looks scarier than it is, simply because it looks like he's clearing up after mistakes. In other teams that's generally why goalkeepers do what he does. But in our case it's the game plan - his position is pushed up so far because it allows the defenders to start every move practically on the halfway line, and presumably he's been handed the position over Walton because he's really good at coming out quickly and clearing the ball. I do wonder how long it'll be before somebody cracks one in from the halfway line against him though. I suppose that's the risk you take.
Was just thinking the same about shooting from the half way line. In fact it would be worth a team trying a couple of long shots early in a game merely to try and force him back and the defence with him.
If I was an opposition manager this is what I'd suggest. Loop in a couple from 40-50 yards when he's off his line. You're probably not going to score them, but you'll put the nerves on Collins and by extension our back 3. And that puts the mockers on our entire approach. Glad nobody has tried it yet lol
you'd imagine they'd have thought of that though. Mind you I'd like to think he has some "triggers" for when he comes off his line.
Mowatt with a wonder goal & 2 assists plus leading from the front all match, just edged it for me from Sibbick who I thought was excellent especially as the game wore on .
Some people are still wanting Walton back in. Collins has been class since he’s come back in. Good shot stopper & plays the sweeper keeper role really well. Takes so much pressure off the back 3 & is a master of wasting time. Can’t believe some of the stick he’s getting from our fans
I get why Collins is in now. Val has obviously seen that he can play this sweeper keeper role. He's doing a great job - must allow our back line to play even further up the field.
He was great and I’d agree if it wasn’t for Mowatt scoring and getting 2 assists! I think it’s difficult to say that doesn’t deserve MOTM
One of the best players despite a poor parry for the goal. He's not a top class shot stopper but his all round game is excellent and well suited to our high line
I love seeing him come out and he must make more headers in a game than some of our outfield players. He did almost get caught once I think when they launched a long range shot over his head that missed the goal. It’s fine lines playing like this. Sometimes it goes wrong when you don’t get enough on a clearance and it comes back straight away (Stoke last season - poor free kick). But, overall, he’s playing his part in our amazing team performances.
That very nearly happened last night when he headed out the through ball to Chair, but the QPR player scuffed the shot. It is bound to happen at some stage, but he definitely saves us in more those situations than he will cost us. Very assured and confident in the role. I think he stated in his interview this week that he loves the role and it keeps him focused and alert during the game.
Given the way we play anyone who is no good at heading the ball has no chance of making the team, keeper included. Great win though. I am never going to watch them at QPR again, I was obviously a jinx.
Where’s the stick coming from. Some have different preferences.( nowt wrong with that. But one poster critisised Walton for coming out too often. Yet Collins does it far more. Both work/worked it to good effect) I think most would agree we are lucky to have 2 such very good young goalies. I’m happy with either. Collins has certainly improved from his previous run in the side. Best 2 since Luke Steele, I would pick either before Davies.
This is what he was brought to the club to do. Walton is great but I think the sweeper keeper role suits Collins more for now. I'm sure Jack will be learning from watching and training with him.
I think he’s justifying his place in the team. I like Walton as well but Collins looks more comfortable with this style of football & coming off his line. It’s not luck when you just beat the forward to the ball every time it’s good decision making. It does make you a bit nervous as it’s not something we’re used to seeing but it’s becoming more normal in football. It’s only what Ederson & Allison have been doing for a couple of seasons.
