It seems to be that the better we do and the worse they do, the obsession with Wednesday by a many on here increases. You could be forgiven at first glance that this is Wednesday fans forum with the amount of posts dedicated to them. It was shocking (although not really) that the majority actually applauded their demise against Reading even though it is detrimental to our playoff chances. I personally couldn't give a monkeys how they do. I don't look for their results, unless it directly affects us. And I know people will say that as I'm far away I'm not as close and embroiled in the rivalry as much as someone who has lived all their life in Barnsley and the surrounding area. A fair point I suppose. It's clear that having Wednesday in the same division as ourselves benefits us financially as it guarantees at least one near sell out per season. I'd be guessing but I'd imagine our highest home gates of the last few years were when Wednesday came to town (not counting playoffs etc...). The same goes for United or any other local team. I find the whole Wednesday thing rather tiresome. I know some will dislike what I am saying but it's my own thoughts on the matter.
It’s not just about the local rivalry, which I disagree with you on anyway - local rivalry is an important part of the game. The way swfc have conducted themselves over the last few seasons can be put into stark contrast to how we have. We have conducted our business fairly and within the bounds of financial fair play. They have not. They have cheated. Now the chickens are coming home to roost and therefore their situation illuminates ours, and vindicates our approach. it was the same with Wigan to a degree. It’s about fairness and justice.
I couldn’t agree more. I work in Sheffield and it is something they talk about on a regular basis. The number of posts lately directing us to their website is cringeworthy. A couple I can understand where they are talking about us but the majority are really just bringing up the same subject. I know rivalry is a part of football but this seems a one way obsession. Strangely enough I feel sorry for the genuine Wendy’s that I work with and their current plight some loudmouths I don’t but when I talk football with them it’s about how good we are not how much I enjoy how bad they are.
I found the people wanting Reading to win really odd. Talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face...
Didn't matter cos we won too. Not often we get to crow about a gap of nearly 30 points and a possible two divisions next season. As others say, it's all part of football local rivalries. Would be a right atmosphere if we were allowed in Oakwell for the game against them.l
Whilst I admit that it can be a tad cringey at times, let’s just remember that this is the Sheffield Wednesday who have a large section of Barnsley based fans because they wanted to follow a ‘big team’. They’ve had their day in the sun, but we appear to have overtaken them now, so anyone who wants to gloat, I cannot fault them.
TBH I don't mind Wednesday due to working with lots of their fans over the years so the banter builds up over time . https://www.owlstalk.co.uk/forums/topic/298928-barnsley-fan-in-peace-not-a-dig-or-a-gloat/ Many other Barnsley fans are the same if the above thread is anything to go by and likewise many Wednesdayites don't mind us reds . Bit of an Everton / Liverpool type rivalry if anything else . Make no mistake though , Wednesday are in huge trouble , as in they could go under . Sure there's a 6 million loan repayment due on the stadium in September but chansri can't even manage the wages as it stands so loss of revenue due to relegation will only compound their problems . Personally I'd rather us play them than a Coventry or Brentford but they might end up with no club . Only natural for our fans to take an interest no matter how much or little you hate them .
Was going to post something similar to this yesterday. You can't disagree with their fans when they say we've got an obsession with them. Why the need for people to post about them on here all the time. I get there may be a few posts but it's getting a bit cringe worthy. Don't give a **** about Wednesday, we're far superior at the present time. I just hope they lose all their remaining games!!
I’m a bit torn. I used to be ‘I hate dee dars’ when I was younger but through work I’ve met plenty & most of them are decent people like most Barnsley fans are. I think ideally you want them in the same league as you for the big matches but to be useless & finish about 20th & roll over in the derbies. I wanted them to do us a favour & get something yesterday but obviously they didn’t & they’ll probably go down. I won’t pretend I won’t be laughing a little if they go down at all the Wombwell, Elsecar, Hoyland Owls etc & the lads I went to school with who supported them even though they had no Sheffield connections. I’ll be laughing at them that sang feed the dingles, I’ll be laughing at them who took the piss when they signed Winnall on 18k a week & he was only their 6th choice forward, I’ll be laughing at Lord Hillsborough & any of the other followers of their clubs that mock Barnsley on social media. I’m only human. Fingers crossed they’ll do a Leeds & have a few seasons down in league one & have some humbling losses at places like Exeter & then they can come back & we’ll have our derbies again.
If you’d spent your entire working life amongst many of their fans like I have I think you’d understand the dislike. They have a massive (no pun intended) sense of entitlement and an air of superiority over our club like you wouldn’t believe. I want them to be relegated and stay down there for a long time. I really should know better at my age, I realise that, but I just can’t help it. Couldn’t happen to a better group of fans.....
I couldn’t agree more. We’re on our best run in a very long time and we’re still obsessing over them. It’s embarrassing. People say that if the roles were reversed then they’d be the same, but I guarantee there wouldn’t be nearly as many threads on owlstalk saying ‘just seen this on BBS’.
I was going to reply but you said it all. In an ideal world they'd be going down along with Birmingham and Derby.
As mentioned on this thread and others I think one of the driving reasons for a lot of Barnsley fans is they know people from Barnsley who are Wednesday fans. We have a couple at work and one I also know from school who I have as a friend on Facebook. These fans seem to be incredibly vocal, often with highly derogatory comments about us, probably to justify their support of Wednesday and not their home town team. Must admit it has gotten to me too over the years and I have bitten more than once. Over recent years I have just started fo respond with "imagine being a plastic/glory fan and choosing Sheffield Wednesday" followed by a chuckle. For balance the wife is from Sheffield and most of her family are Wednesday fans and are just normal fans like us. Aside from a little friendly banter when we play each other they are fine.
They are still going on about "taking" our manager and players so the delusions are as massive as ever. And isn't this thread itself adding to the threads? look on the Norwich forum, plenty of stuff about Ipswich .
