With that in mind, would it be feasible just to demolish and rebuild the upper section, leaving the lower tier as it is? Logically it should save quite a bit of money, although in practice I realise this isn't always the case.
Financially I'm sure that would be a cheaper option but with the cheaper option comes the limitations. Knock it down and build a copy of the east stand with revenue generating facilities built into the back of it and it would be future proofed and actually make the club money daily. Do it cheap and you have lost all the space under the lower tier. Instead of it being usable space it would be a pile of concrete.
My point was: safe standing is coming back to higher level football in England - and so it should. I've no objection to fans sitting down - why should they object to those who prefer to stand? As the West Stand will hopefully be redeveloped at some point, there's an opportunity to accommodate 'choice' for supporters - that's a good thing isn't it? I know that won't be a universally popular view on this Board as one of the most striking changes in football that I've seen is; when I started watching Barnsley regularly in the 70's the average age of the fans seemed to be about 17 years old! it's now nearer 70 and i know some of you old folk like to sit down with your thermos and your tartan blanket (Big Lil). The irony is that those 17 year olds are the same ones who are probably the same ones that are nearer 70, such as been the change in the demographic of those who attend - but some would deny today's fans the choice that they had. 21 century progress. Hey who knows, we might even get that...erm..what's it called.....oh yes..atmosphere into the ground again. God forbid. Incidentally, ILEY OUT
I'd happily see it introduced in a new stand but I hope that those who want it are happy for those specific tickets to be higher than the tickets for everyone else as they have higher costs associated with them. If everyone is happy with that reasonable condition then I say go for it
YEah. Found that really interesting and didnt know that. I'm 6'2" and have gravitated towards the west lower where I've had a season ticket last few years as I find it more comfortable than east lower and upper.
It’s a better view of the rest of the ground from there as well. I’ve had a ST in the ESL for a few years but I’d rather be on the other side. Maybe not when it’s raining though!
The club must surely have plans to get it up to scratch for next season? It will be needed for some games even if we don't go up. If we do go up the whole ground will sell out by June to pass holders and people will have to use flexi ticket for cup games.
Was wandering if they decided to build a new West stand and they gave the opposition allocated seats in the north stand near to players Tunnel . Would there be access between North stand and East stand to give rest of North stand to home fans thus keeping rival fans separate . Or would away fans be excluded whilst build in progress?
Don’t let any away fans in at all would be best. They don’t like visiting Barnsley anyway. They always sing that they “wanna go home” don’t they? Easy - don’t come. Job done
There’s currently no way to introduce safe standing. The west stand needs sorting sooner rather than later. If that happens before safe standing is legal it will be seats in there. Simple as that.
All this debate about the West stand, yes it's old, yes it's a bit dilapidated but it's still better than most of Hillsbrough
The old school What happened? I thought it had been purchased for flats? It's been ages since it was sold hasn't it (and I mean ages before the pandemic too). That piece of land would be ideal for a Redfearn's bar area / social area that could be used all week long, maybe even a bigger club shop. Also, when planning the west stand, it can't be that high for lighting to houses on Grove St. Unless the club bought them all over the years (which would have been a sound investment).
I think it’s mandatory to have a percentage , it’s something like 25% in FA cup but I don’t think it’s as much as that in league . Just wondered if we could get a dispensation whilst new Stand were being built but if not how would we manage them .
Dane said in the Radio Sheffield interview (available on BBC Sounds), they had plans in place for every situation, regarding the West Stand.
With a job that big I doubt it would save much leaving the lower tier, in fact it could cost as much money to protect it and work around it whilst building the upper section.
