Seriously I empathise with TK as I often pass women in pouring rain, either struggling with kids or bags of shopping and think how I would love to help but daren't because someone may report my actions and the difficulties that would bring.
Years ago people would have been lauded for kindness but now people genuinely trying to help are regarded as weird.
The world has changed and unfortunately not for the better where the perception of p

She probably said it for a dare.:)

In a way it's a bit like when a cyclist get's hit and killed by a car. The knee-jerk reaction from the authorities is not to make changes to the road to make it safer for cycling, but to ban cyclists from the road.

its not only young women either a young bloke on his own is pretty vulnerable ( depending on his build I suppose).
It really is a sad indictment of todays society though, even when I was younger if you saw a child fall over and hurt, you picked them up and made sure they were OK, you really have to think twice now, alright I would but be really careful and its like that with young women now ( not picking them up obviously) I mean you never followed them like a stalker but you would always offer to help if needed everybody is more on edge now.

I know a lot of men who have been attacked arbitrarily while out at night. Every single one of my friends at least once. As have I.
I don't know a single woman who has. I'm not saying it doesn't happen I'm saying I know a lot of women and not one of them has.
However I do know a number of women who have been abused by people they trusted.
And I know men who have been falsely accused.

None of this addresses things that are likely to happen. What happened to the young women recently is, thankfully, very rare. A man getting attacked in the street isn't. Nor is a woman (or girl) being attacked in her own home. Personally I think we should try to address things that happen every day.

To be fair to the baroness, once you look beyond the sensationalist headlines and the opposition parties trying to score points, the curfew for men comment is in response to the police telling women not to go out alone after dark. She's mocking that advice saying don't put in effect a curfew on women, maybe put one on men.

If it sounds absurd it is meant to, to highlight how absurd the police advice is. Some men are up in arms about this 'proposal'. But some of those very same men wouldn't think twice about suggesting that women don't go out after dark. It edges on victim blaming. Why shouldn't women go out at all hours of the day.

There's a much wider issue here though than one man murdering one woman. In the same way that the current shows of solidarity against racism, isn't just about George Floyd's murder.

I agree that a curfew is probably not the solution, and would be impossible to enforce anyway. But it goes back to what some men just constitute as laddish behaviour, when in a matter of fact, it's actually harassment.

There was a post on here a few months ago. Someone's daughter has recently moved to Dublin, and is being subject to constant harassment by men. One particular poster suggested it should be taken as a compliment, but therein lies the problem. Whilst 99% of men aren't ever going to kill a woman, how many of us truthfully can say we've not done something in the past, that we think is harmless, but is in fact, far from it.

Me and my partner have been doing a lot of walking recently, and the number of times a van has driven past us, and someone has shouted or whistled at her, is unbelievable.

I don't think a cufew is the answer, but as is often the case, education would certainly help.

    it’s not an either/or Jay.
And back to the original point (the fictitious curfew).
It’s blokes who are attacking blokes, and it’s blokes who are attacking women.

The problem is still ‘the blokes’.

Don’t be coming round here with your reasonable reaction to a headline, remember it’s all about knee jerk and picking the winning side.

Somewhere in the region of 2% of a population would be clinically diagnosed as a psychopath or sociopath. That isn't too far off 1 in 30. Although most of those diagnosed don't go out to hurt people - but it is a common trait in ruthless businessmen and politicians.

A murder is rare the abuse and intimidation of women is incredibly commonplace.

Walking to the train station one morning I noticed a little girl about 10 sobbing. Dint look right so I waited some distance away. At least four women noticed her but walked straight past. What can you do? I had a word with her and it turned out she was on her way to school but was short of 50p for the train fare. Gave her a quid. Sorted. But as you say I did feel a bit uncomfortable. Still got to be done.

If a woman is saying she is scared to go out after dark, you should be saying:

"That's horrible, what can I do to help"

    Not

"Well it's not all men, so its not a big problem"

    That's all.

I've just had a hospital appointment and had to wait for the department to open. I was early by about 15 minutes. So I sat in a small waiting area where shortly after 2 other men came and waited, then a woman. I decided to sit and watch behaviours. And the two most telling things were firstly that the woman didn't look up at all until the receptionist appeared and started registering people. And secondly, as the seating area was a thoroughfare, that the two men looked up every time a person passed. If it was a man, they looked back down again. If it was a woman, they didn't. They ogled. One worse than the other, but neither were especially subtle.

It's that behavioural backdrop that women live there lives.
