A sad day. One of the last commentators of any sport who came across as a genuine, passionate, knowledgeable fan who would have been on the edge of his seat watching his chosen sport if he didn’t have his dream job. Even after years and years on the circuit he always came across like he couldn’t believe his luck, and he was by all accounts a lovely man.

I mentioned Sam Matterface in the most hated commentators thread (although hate is probably too strong a word) for precisely that reason - the modern way seems to be all slick, media trained, buzzwords & ‘witticisms’, but no ‘feel’ for the sport. Murray’s mistakes and quirks enriched every race and as others have mentioned, watching the sport on tv hasn’t been the same since he retired.

    RIP

I didn't realise he'd retired or that he was 97! I never watch Formula one but if I see it in the news or in sports highlights I imagine that Walker is still commentating.

can just imagine St Peter at the pearly gates, doing a "here comes Murray Walker pulling into the pits" impression as he arrives :)
