I've seen a lot of calls for Styles to go into the middle of the park.

There's been the odd call for Kane to come back in, who does look like the natural replacement for Mowatt.

Personally, I think I'd go with Aapo Halme. My main criticism of Romal Palmer is that he occasionally over commits and leaves us exposed at the back. Having a more defensive minded midfield partner might just give him that bit more licence to get forward, which I think he's itching to do.

That would of course prevent us from using the Aapo card when we're defending a lead in the final half hour.

The form of Jordan Williams when he has featured this season though, does make it easy for us to move Styles into midfield, safe in the knowledge that Williams is more than capable of creating on that left hand side.

Having reflected on it I would probably go for Herbie Kane or even stick Halme in and allow Palmer to get a bit further forward.

if Kane isn’t doing the business, replace him with Styles.

Straight swap. Kane in. Keep Palmer, bring Halme on as needed. We’re moving along nicely, no need to move things around. Trust the players.

Great post, well reasoned points. The first thing I'd say is that we now have options, all over the park. Will we miss Mowatt if he's unavailable - undoubtedly. He's been our best player for over two years now, but we've got a few options now. Which we didn't have at the start of the season. VI's got the best out of his players, of that there is no doubt.

My only slight concern is that Jordan isn't quite yet up to speed, as the first half at Bournemouth showed. Whatever happens, whatever formation/players we play, in Val we trust.

    Up the Reds :)

My take on it too....straight swap, don't mess with the system.

Halme isn't a midfielder. Not sure he has the pace or ability on the ball to be starting games in that position. If he'd been able to control the ball on Wednesday, or hooked it over his shoulder in the way that infuriates a few on here, Mowatt wouldn't be banned.

Beat me to it. It was his loss of control that lead to the sending off.

Whilst I get your point, it was an 80/20 ball in Mowatt's favour. He didn't need to make the tackle that he did, he was always going to win the ball in my opinion. Whilst it might not have been great play from Halme, I don't think he should take much blame for what was a poor decision by Mowatt in my opinion. Whether it's a sending off or not is another matter, but he gave the referee a decision to make when he didn't need to. That's my view on it anyway.

I think I'm entirely alone on this, but as much as Williams has improved I don't like seeing him play on the left, he's too right footed. Would rather pick Odour there and move Styles into the middle, though I accept that leaves some defensive weakness. Would be interesting to see how he's developed in the time he's been out of the side.

    Only make one change.

Kane for Mowatt. Leave Styles out left and go with our strongest 1st 11 to start.

Saw a bit of the pigs on Wed after our game and their pace comes from hung Windass and Harris out wide and that is our only “weakness” that I’ve seen exploited. Might be a decent call to have Williams in at LWB for his extra pace but realistically I think it’ll just be Kane into the centre and leave everyone else as normal ‍♂️

That's fair, and wasn't really blaming him solely for the red, but it was an example of what can happen when you have a centre back playing in midfield, and the exact opposite of what VI wants to happen in our half, if you're going to lose it make sure it travels towards their goal in the process. Palmer / Kane to start for me, with Styles on the left. Williams can then come on and Styles move infield.

Styles and Kane in the middle and Williams at LWB.

I think Palmer might have been switched for this game anyway regardless of the Mowatt red card so Styles and Kane is arguably our most experienced pairing. Wouldn't surprise me if there's half an eye on next season with the three games that Mowatt misses out on.

We're in with a shout of Pro...... to the Pre..... so there's no taking the foot off the gas now. Val's going to play his strongest team in his eyes, should Mowatt be unavailable. Also, he's also said one game at a time. In Val we trust
