Saw him and Ben Elton in St Austell mid 80s...both brilliant. Rik came on first as Kevin Turvey and asked "Are there any kids in the audience?"....about 10 shouted up "Yes". Clearly taken by surprise by kids being there he said " Well that's half my act buggered !"
Tommy Cooper, Eric Morecambe, and Ronnie Barker are really beyond compare. In terms of modern comics, Jimmy Carr is brilliant, you can tell that he is a very clever bloke, he is vulgar but you can see the wheels turning and he's not malicious. Also a big fan of Dara O'Briain and Ross Noble, their improv stuff is really good and the act you see differs hugely from night to night. I also reckon Dave Chappelle is massively underrated over here.
Old school - Spike, Tommy Cooper, Dave Allen, Peter Cook contemporary - Ross Noble, Bob Mortimer, Daniel Kitson, Ed Byrne, David O’Doherty
Many mentioned above such as coogan, gervais, , Ahearne, Cleese etc I would say Sasha Baron Cohen is a complete comedy genius too, surprised he’s not been mentioned. Early Ali G is some of the funniest things I have seen.
I think the one modern day comedian that always makes me laugh is Frank Skinner.i wouldn't call him a genius though.
No mention of Michael McIntyre. Good. So it’s not just me that thinks unfunny puns shrieked in an irritating squawk are not comedy.
I think he writes and stars in excellent comedy series, with 3D characters, but his stand up is below average.
