Stanhope was the place they sent folk to recuperate after ops. Went there in the 60's to visit a Royston lad who had just had a knee op
I’ve been following this thread and trying to resist posting. There was a similar one posted a few months ago and I did post on that one. There’s always the certainty that some people will see you as either a liar, or a crank when you talk about this stuff, therefore you don’t talk about it. The last two houses I’ve owned were haunted, this one isn’t, as far as I know. The first one I want to talk about was a new build in a small village that had been a major Roman settlement. The land had history, but I don’t think it was a Roman spirit. We lived with it and it was only present now and again. There were two presences and one was lovely it was a scent of flowers and very strong. I always thought of my grandmother and that she was protecting us from the other one. It was strong enough to make you sneeze in December and very loving. The other was mischievous and not confined to my house. The woman across the road came to our house in a state because someone was upstairs and she was afraid. I went across to put her mind at rest and went upstairs to look around (what was I looking for? I haven’t a clue). Needless to say there was nothing to be seen. In my house the mischievous one would act up at special times Christmas etc. The boiler started streaming water when my wife was in. She told me she’d seen it and I went to try to fix it. Not only was it bone dry, there was dust that hadn’t been disturbed and certainly not been wet ever. My son went away to Sweden on a school trip and brought a present back for a girl he was sweet on (he was 15). He wrapped it up and had it at the side of his bed. We were woken up in the middle of the night with him shouting. He’d seen a dark shape in his room. My wife was faster than me and saw the shape going down the stairs. The present had been trashed. We searched the house and found nothing. These events happened over a period of 8 years so it’s not as if it was all the time. The scent was more common. I’m not getting into the belief/disbelief thing, because it just happened there’s nothing to disbelieve, nor do I have an explanation. I think I’m a rational person (who doesn’t?)
Exactly. Hence my original post. I can't say whether I believe or not but that was what happened to me. Remember it as clear as day. Well it was night but yer know what I mean.

Like some Im agnostic. and I supposed the same to the ghost and spirit world..never actually seen owt bt the hairs on ya neck and the feeling am not alone...yes Purposely went to a haunted cellar, alone I walked to the end and back..alone ???..no definitely not
I've had 2 strange things happen to me: Firstly, i was working late in the office in Leeds, probably last one in the building and nature called, I was in the toilet facing the wall, doing my thing, and you know how you sense your're not alone in a room? I just suddenly felt like there was someone standing behind me, I turned my head and as I turned I caught a shadow out of the corner of my eye right next to me and felt something like a kick to the back of my foot. I was, pretty freaked out to say the least. Secondly, I was at a governors meeting one evening at the Junior school my son went to, there were around 6 people in the staff room sat round going through the business when the hanging blinds on the window behind where the school secretary was sat just kind of jumped like they'd been pushed, and I got a really strange feeling similar to what had happened in Leeds. I said "Did anyone else see that?" to which she said, like it was the most normal thing in the world, "oh its Margaret making herself known", now I'd known the lady she spoke about, someone who'd helped out at the school for decades, a really nice lady, who'd died about 5 years before. The secretary said she often made herself known in school, and the headteacher had obviously seen something as well and said "can we not talk about it? It freaks me out." I was also alone in the school hall one night after a parents evening and I just felt like she was there, I even shouted "Hello?" - very strange feeling. Side note - My wifes friend was a nurse in a old peoples home and she used to talk to the ghosts there were that many of them! Anyone who dismisses the whole thing is entitled to their opinion about it, but I know what happened to me, and its not explainable by science.
Similar to a previous poster, I've resisted until now, but when I was little we had to live my my Nan and Grandad for a while due to Mum & Dad's house sale falling through. Anyways, Nan & Grandad had a large downstairs cellar that always was creepy, cold, dark & damp. Grandad used it for chopping wood on a big stone table in the middle of the cellar, but on the left hand side was a smaller room, that stored Grandad's wood pile. It had a glass window, so that you could see the wood pile in the store room from the chopping table. Inside the wood store was a little bench at one side, again you could see this bench from the chopping board. One day, I went down into the cellar, don't ask me why, because it was creepy. I looked into the store room through the window and saw a little boy staring straight back at me. I thought it was my younger brother at first pranking about. I couldn't tell because of the semi-darkness as the light only lit the other side of the cellar. I ran upstairs scared out of my wits, to find my younger brother playing in our room. There's no way he could have beat me upstairs, so it couldn't have been him. I told him what I'd just seen and he laughed it off. A few weeks later, my brother came running back upstairs from the cellar white as a sheet. "You've just seen that little boy in the store room haven't you?" I asked. "Yes" he replied. We moved out a few weeks later.....
My best mate (best man) and his brother (also a mate and ex Barnsley player) would both laugh off anything like ghosts or mediums - I've seen their p155-taking and mockery 1st hand over the years. There are no such things as ghosts, after-life, UFOs or anything conspiracy related in their world. Everything has a logical explanation. However, even they have a story from their family holiday about 5 years ago. About 10 of them went, and hired a nice big villa in a remote Spanish village near Granada, away from the hassle of the crowds. They BOTH saw the same thing on multiple occasions - a young girl who would appear in the house or garden, but there was never any sign of her when they actually tried to engage or follow her. There is not much more to tell, but what makes it really freaky to me is that when prompted about it, they are not their normal cocky selves in being dismissive, and it was obviously an experience that neither can explain and neither feels comfortable about. Talking to Paul about it you can tell he is freaked out - it messes with his brain that he can't give a logical explanation, even though he has settled on the fact it must have been a local toddler wondering about. The fact that she was at the end of their bed in the middle of the night, and he followed her down a corridor to see where she would go ............ he can't answer that. And because he is uncomfortable with it, it makes it a spookier-than-normal tale when I ask about it.
I’ll throw something else in here. I remember some psychologist explaining how the memory plays tricks on you. Apparently when you remember a distant event, you’re not actually remembering that event. What you’re doing is remembering your last memory of it. So, if something happens, your first memory of that event is pretty accurate. But from then on, you are remembering your previous memories and those memories are sometimes modified (without you even knowing it) to take into account things you’ve seen or heard afterward. Even thinking about that is doing my head in.
There's an interesting thing on inherited memory too. So you may not get your Dad's looks and your Mum's ailments etc, you might also got snippets of their memories too. Ergo, you can remember things that aren't your memories, they are theirs.
Now that is weird. Going to have to look into this. If that was the case then surely there's be some sort of argument for the paranormal
Memory is a tricky thing. In my early teens, I holidayed at the coast with my Auntie and family. One day we walked from the caravan park along a long road to a nearby cove and had a coffee in a little cafe that overlooked the sea. Forty years later, my wife and I happened to be near the same area, so for old times sake I drove us down to the cove. When we got there I was amazed. The cove was exactly as I remembered it, and the cafe was still there too, looking just the same... except that it was situated on the opposite side of the road from the version in my memory.
