Does this part of the rule not show that he was offside?

“clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent”

in running toward the goal in an offside position, I would say he was attempting to play the ball?

It’s not an offence to run towards the goal.

True, but in getting into the position he was in, was he not attempting to play the ball, and did that not impact the opponent’s actions?

I’m no referee, but I think I’d have interpreted it as offside.

There are far too many grey areas now, and they seem intent on introducing more, its like Brian clough said, if your on the pitch your interfering with play, if anybody is offside, get the flag up, it should be black and white then everyone knows where they stand..

So, if the defender let it go and the Watford player put it in, the goal would be ruled out for offside, but because the defender stopped it getting to him he's not offside even though the offside rule is from when the ball was kicked.

Football is an utter farce. It no longer has any credibility, it's just a nonsense. That this happened to Wednesday makes no difference, the rules of the sport no longer make any logical sense.

Personally I think not, he did not make the player mis control the ball, which resulted in the goal.
I think that’s where the interpretation comes in does impacting mean making him play the ball or mis control the ball?
Edit, he also made no attempt to play the ball, he was actually running away from the defender.

I don’t think there’s no right or wrong, which is why the two Officials had a different view.

If the current interpretation of the offside law dictates that this wasn’t offside, then they need to change the interpretation.

Wednesday or not, that shouldn’t be a goal. The defender lets the ball go across him if the player isn’t beyond him. His presence is what forces him to play the ball, quite clearly. It’s an absolute farce, and if that goal was conceded by us I’d be incandescent with rage. Could you imagine Big Val in that circumstance? You wouldn’t want to be the fourth official.
