Why what's happened??? Only joking I'm too young to remember it properly but I do remember the queen's mother die I was on holiday at the time and about 8 but how was that covered? Was it on every BBC channel aswel?
But what if moaning is your main hobby? You can't do it properly unless you have some stuff to moan about.
Think it was something similar with banner announcements on other channels and non stop coverage on BBC One. The Queen Mum's death was only six months or so after 9/11, which I think is the event that really set the precedent for this type of modern major event coverage. 9/11 was when this type of news became an event in itself, even more so than when Diana died. I think the BBC massively misjudged it in devoting both BBC One, Two, and News channels to it and taking BBC Four off air. I don't think it reflects the type of person he was. I especially don't think he would have approved of the pointless waffle that went on just to fill time. They could have done a very respectful couple of hours on BBC One and followed up with an extended news special in the evening, and ran the non-stop coverage on the news channel.
If 100,000 complained then out of a population of 66.5 million, 66.5 million of us didn't, give or take 100,000.
There’s something on TV I don’t want to watch. But instead of turning it off and doing something else I’m going to spend time writing and submitting a futile complaint about it. I can kind of understand it if people want to complain about the antics of Piers Morgan, but commemorating the death of the husband of the head of state? What have we become?
But then it might be clear how many people don't care and by association how irrelevant the royal family are. I mean I'm sure North Korea would do the same thing...
Just another example of how bitter, sh!tty and divisive a country we have become. 100,000 people complaining about something that's shown on TV when there are a minimum of 30+ other channels of other things to watch. We've turned into a nation of tribalistic pustules of hatred trapped in the echo chambers of our social media. Depressing.
Exactly this. Points of View – a sad little programme filled with sad little people with nothing better to do with their time than rant on about things they didn’t have to watch. Now the same kind of people ‘vent their anger’ on Twitter an everyone’s supposed to take them seriously. Social media - Circus of the Damned
Don't forget that Channel 5 will have to precede the funeral programme with the usual pappy nannying warnings that the following programme contains scenes of "sad and depressing mourning death which some viewers may find upsetting." I wonder if ad breaks will still show simple cremation, funeral insurance and over 50s death cover?
i’d been to the coast and was driving back listening to a match commentary on 5live, once the newsflash came through they cancelled the coverage of the match so I listened to an Elvis Costello cd for the rest of the journey.
Essentially, people complained not because of what was being broadcasted, but because of what wasnt. They didn’t show Masterchef or Eastenders... Was it over the top? Yeah probably. But complain because they didn’t put pointless or house of games on? Folk have too much time on their hands, they really do. As has been accurately stated, the BBC is a state broadcaster. The husband and consort of the head of state had passed away. Part of the coverage was clearly prerecorded stuff from the mans own kids - so it was obviously pending from when he left hospital and had been planned meticulously. The state broadcaster was doing its duty - and the commercial broadcasters tended to follow suit by choice. Moan or not, it was heavily watched. When the queen passes away, which will in all likelihood be in the coming few years given her age, the coverage will be even more comprehensive. Folk will probably moan again - but that will actually be a momentous occasion in history. Royalist or not, republican, or maybe not really arsed, it will make a big difference. If you aren’t interested, don’t watch. And it might be my memory but the coverage was no more prevalent than it was for Diana - I was a mere teenager then, there weren’t the same number of channels etc, but it was all about her on tv all that week. My memory was that they cancelled the liverpool newcastle game that was meant to be on sky that Sunday - I was narked about that as the previous two seasons the games had finished 4-3! Can’t really remember the Queen Mother’s coverage. As I probably didn’t watch it. I think I was about 18/19 so I was probably hungover.
I think the moan of people was because the exact same thing was shown on two channels at the same time. BBC didn't have to go to those lengths. If they had shown two different Phillip related broadcasts (one channel his death coverage and the other an old documentary about him for example) then fair enough.
According to the figures I saw, viewing figures for the major channels were significantly down on the Friday previously - some by over 60%.
