My post wasn't a negative. Reading dropped points so I genuinely didn't give a f c uk other than the defeat soured an otherwise decent weekend.
Well there is always more interest if you have a dog in the fight. It's bleedin obvious if your team is playing, you find it more interesting. But as a spectacle in terms of talent, class, and enjoyment as a consequence, there really is no comparison. Which part of the last 30 minutes would have got you captivated by today, if you didn't support BFC or Coventry? Compared to the game yesterday, played by players at the top of the tree? Presumably it would have been a better semi final game if they'd all hoofed it up in the sky at the earliest opportunity.
You’re just being extreme and pedantic now to try and prove a point. Not much point in a decent debate at that stage is there? I never suggested the ball needed hoofing in the semi-final yesterday. But I thought it was an incredibly boring last 30 minutes considering a place in the FA Cup final was up for grabs. Of course having a personal interest in today’s game makes it more entertaining by default, but even the game itself just felt a closer, more on edge affair than Wembley. Chalk and cheese in terms of quality of course, but I know plenty of people who switched off yesterday. No point in quality if there’s little in the way of goalmouth action - even if that comes from a long ball. It’s really not that crazy an opinion to have and I’m surprised it’s on you’re wanting to challenge so much.
Well I'm not sure why you think I've gone beyond the point of debating. If you think that yesterday was boring and today wasn't, and you think that that was nothing to do with being a BFC supporter, then I suppose there is no point debating further. I'm not against anyone having an opinion btw.
Thing is, I’ve acknowledged that part of it is because I’m a Barnsley supporter, but I’ve also given fair reasons above and beyond that. Nothing more I can say really but it’s hardly a ‘Gordon Bennett’ of an opinion is it?
I would imagine from an impartial regular football watching fan's point of view, then it is. Yes. But it's your opinion. Fair enough.
I’d suggest it’s probably not as exclusive as an opinion as you’re suggesting. There’s plenty of people get frustrated watching 15 minutes of pretty football for one moment of breathtaking action. Especially as you drop down the leagues. To a Premier League fanatic and an armchair supporter you’re absolutely right. Remember I’m not comparing quality or how easy on the eye it might be.
Struggle to understand any Barnsley fan who isn't excited at the prospect of watching us in a play-off position in the Championship. I understand those who have argued eloquently about the style of football not being to their taste. I don't agree but have read with interest. But I don't believe I've ever read them say they weren't excited by our victories or some of our passages of play, just that some periods in some games have been dour. They have, I don't dispute that, but some periods in some matches under the guidance of both Wilson and Hunter were dour. In April 82, the season of the League Cup run, when we really should have been promoted to Division 1, when we were spectacular, the cameras came down to Oakwell for a visit by Derby. We were to be the main match on ITVs highlights package (Was it The Big Match?). It ended 0-0 and it was that uneventful they apologised before showing the game and didn't include a single second of the first half. They managed to stretch the highlights of the second half to about 2 minutes, but that was a real push. In Wilson's promotion season we drew 0-0 at home to Oxford and literally nothing happened. Actually, it got foggy, so at least it prevented us seeing nothing happening. Great football teams are involved in poor matches. Fortunately our memories fade and we only remember the good bits, or, as I've demonstrated above, the unbelievably bad bits, which were way worse than anything I've seen this season. The rest of the dross from those seasons I've forgotten, as we'll all forget the boring bits from this season, it's just that we're close to it right now. There's a debate worth having about our style of play, albeit my opinion being that you get poor/uneventful performances whatever style of play your team adopts. But I really don't get this gloating when we finally lose one, as though this somehow proves a point. This isn't directed at the majority who aren't impressed with our current style, I know they don't do that and are more likely to speak about it when we win than when we lose, as they're savvy enough to realise the point they're making is more powerful at such a time.
There's a reason why Premier League players get paid 10 t0 often 100 times more per week more than those in the leagues below. It's because people want to watch them, either live or from their armchair. Man City play the pretty football you refer to. Lots of other premier league teams aren't so fussy. It's a great product. When we drop down a division, the crowd drops too. Fact of life.
In relation to our style of play, It would be interesting to see some comprehensive stats about where the ball is in our games. You see this with sky where they show you the “action areas” and split the pitch into 3. We are criticised for being direct but I think our style is quite different to the old “route one” as it used to be called. Put simply, I think VI just wants the ball to be as far up the pitch as possible at all times. He doesn’t care about possession like the tiki taka teams. personally I find it ok to watch when we are on top of our game (as against Chelsea) but it can be quite dull at other times. But who cares? We won’t play this way for ever. We are about to have our best finish for 20 years. If we get into the PL we will struggle big time, as 75% off teams promoted from the championship do. But it’ll be something different.
Thats because fans crave success and get behind winning teams. The correlation with that is as relevant as any perceived quality of football. You also mentioned how much players get paid. Again, I wasn’t suggesting anything on quality or entertainment overall. It was a one off like for like comparison so you’re saying things I wouldn’t disagree with.
