IMO the best current writer of "fantasy". Although the two new ones are borderline steampunk. No author I have read does battle scenes better.

I didn't see it mentioned, but if you might want to check out BookBub (https://www.bookbub.com/welcome) - they send out a daily email with cheap/free books on Amazon. The free books vary in quality, and are often the first of a series but it can be a good way to find out if you like it and want to continue before you invest.

    UPDATE
Today's daily deal includes "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" at 99p.
One of those iconic books that I've never read.
Has anyone on here read it?
I don't bother too much with non-fiction, but might give it a try.

    Today's Kindle deal includes
    Dean Koontz - Watchers. 99p

My favourite Kootz novel. A nice mix of sci-fi, horror, suspense, action, adventure, and romance.
    Recommended to dog lovers everywhere.

You’re welcome! I preferred her first trilogy, The Black Magician, so you might want to go for that one if you do decide to try more.

Ive never used kindle but have loads of audio books downloaded off the interweb.
However i have just bought off ebay the set of six real books by Winston Churchill about the second world war.
A very daunting prospect ahead of me as each book contains between 600 and 800 pages and is in very small type.
Not a bad buy for £14.99.

For old fashioned ... and to be honest for those of us who prefer freebies ... it’s worth trying “libby”. This is the app that libraries use and gives access to their electronic collections. You can reserve and borrow books from your armchair for 3 weeks a time.

There is also an ability to borrow some popular magazines such as new scientist, economist, top gear, etc. There doesn’t appear to be a time limit on these!

To widen the collection available you can join more than one library. The app allows you to add electronic library cards from different libraries. I’m currently a member of both Barnsley and Kirklees libraries and often if something is not available in one it is in the other.

I'll keep an eye on this, as it sounds great, but the Libby app is getting a lot of negative reviews after its latest update (early April, I think). Have you used it recently?

Did Patrick Cryne ever disclose what was the nom de plum he used to write his three part Cormack McCarthy-esque post-apocalyptic trilogy? Seem to remember it had sold quite a lot of copies on Kindle Direct Publishing.

Haven’t used it for a few months, I tend to dip in and out of these things. Just checked out the reviews and been in the app again. The layout has changed but it still seems quite logical and relatively easy to follow. I was up and running with a new book in minutes with none of the delays mentioned.

The app has a largely positive rating. I’ve looked at some of the recent criticisms and they tend to be from those new to the platform as their library has migrated from RB digital (which incidentally Barnsley use for magazines) and they are not used to the layout and those that don’t like the new Libby layout. Others mentioned waiting times for books, this is frustrating but no more so than any physical library. I find the reservation experience quite helpful giving how long you’re likely to wait for a book and notifying when available. Being a member of two libraries also helps with this as they have different collections and availability.

Of course none of this is quite as convenient as having own book collection but it’s free, well organised into categories and easy to navigate when you are used to it. So all in all I find it a useful addition to supplement the books I have bought off kindle and other electronic platforms.

just realised it seems like I’m selling this, but honestly no shares in the company, it’s just another option to use.
