One of the things I'm missing during the pandemic, is visits to Retrodome just off West Way. I like playing the old PS1 and sit down driving games I used to play when I was a kid. But I'm a real sucker for the 80s arcade cabinets and pinball machines, that were a bit before my time. Phoenix, Q*Bert, Galaga and Revenge from Mars pinball are particular favourites of mine. Anyone got any particular favourites?
I started on the originalSpace invaders. Used to have on in Tunstall Cross Chippy in about 1979. Spent a fair amount of time on them when a uni student Phoenix was my favourite and I could usually post the days High score and keep going for a long time for 2p especially as I could spin one into the 10p slot for 5 credits. Also enjoyed Joust and Frogger but never spent the time to become expert
Asteroids. Missile Command. Both favourites when I was a young un. I'd happily waste a few hours on them right now if I had the original machines somewhere handy.
OutRun, Space Harrier, Track & Field are the ones I lost the most childhood time to. I'm also lucky enough to have access to them all again pretty much on my doorstep thanks to Arcade Club in Leeds. Well worth a visit for anyone who likes this stuff. I'm 99% certain that every arcade game listed in the thread so far is available to play there, plus others like Hyper Sports, Gauntlet. You pay a fee on entry, get a wristband for the day and everything is set to free play once inside. Brilliant fun. https://www.arcadeclub.co.uk/leeds/
Donkey Kong in pubs in the 80's. Totally skipped the gaming generation. Apart from a few bashes on Asteroids and Space Invaders, Donkey Kong was the only game I got mildly hooked on.
I got hooked on the Nintendo 64 and Goldeneye when I was a teenager but grew out of it to be honest. I like the odd blast on Forza when me and Laura have babysat but that's about it.
Nothing beat the "thrill" of sticking your 10p in a slot in the Cue Ball and playing whatever your favourite game was. Personally, Guantlet (I & II), Wonder Boy, Super Mario and Slap Fight were the most played games. Have enjoyed some retro fun with "Mame" in the past, but current work laptop is locked down so I can't on it any more (and not travelling so don't need the same distractions!)
Talking of the PS1 games, I originally lost approx 250 hours of my life to the original final fantasy 7, over a couple of replays. It was one of the first games with the little tell-tale counters that showed how long you had been playing. The reboot that came out last year was super smooth and beautifully detailed, but I didn’t find myself going back after I had completed the storyline to look for all the hidden items etc. Always preferred a good pinball machine over an arcade video game, and the one I miss the most would be ‘the Addams family ‘ movie spin off from around the early nineties.
My favourite was (and still is) Scramble, did once get 100,000 having completed the whole game four times over. Also liked Super Cobra (the sequel to scramble), moon cresta, Phoenix, Galaxians, frogger and many other classics from the early 80s! Did remember them having a Galaxians at the top of the stairs in Simco on shambles street.
The Retrodome is well worth a visit. Owner is a pal of mine and I'm not just recommending because of that. It's a unique venue in town and should be supported as such.
I've just put one of these in the bar in the cellar: Mario Themed Home Arcade Machine | Roll Model Arcades Highly recommend the guy if anyone is thinking of one. 3000 games.
