And therein is the nub of the problem. What can labour or lib dems too for that matter, do to make them electable as a government?
Where's the sneering? This government and its leader are all of those things. That is but a fact. People are voting for it. That is also a fact.
Aye everyone who voted leave or Tory is an obnoxious, ignorant, selfish, racist bigot. That about sums the feeling up on this board at the minute. I'm going to stick to football and masturbation from now on
sorry, i understand your opinion on this, but i am afraid the far left has never succeeded when they have been leadership in the labour movement. I appreciate it is like insulting some sort of god and the classic line "but Corbyn" is accurate. The far left and those closest to Corbyn and the Momentum group were 1970s dinosaurs. The UK model of militant Unions has seen the right destroy the manufacturing base of this country whereas the consensual Union movements in somewhere like Germany has seen them develop a strong manufacturing base with the employees rights and pay that we aspired to here Momentum laid into Keir within moments of the Hartlepool results announcement. How is this helpful?
I’d bet the result would have been nigh on identical if the Labour candidate was a Brexiteer. Because Labour are seen as ‘remain’, they have nowhere to go on Brexit, till the reality hits home wider.
I just told Lady Kaht Labour got hammered in Hartlepool. She said: "So did we, last time we were there!"
I said a week or so ago that Starmer and Labour need to come up with alternatives to what the Tories offer - Starmer continues to criticize and analyse but offers no alternative - what happened in Hartlepool is a reflection of that - beginning of the end for Labour now, the left will break away and form their own party imo and split Labour in two
Owen Jones covered this really well: One tactics the Tories are using is to plough money into the new seats they have won so that can show they are making a change. I got 4/1 for the Tories to win by more than 5000 after watching this video
The irony is that the current Tory manifest has shown the power of uniting factions. The far right has burgeoned and not enough of the centrists have railed against that to offset the gains. The result, the far right, right and right centre have aligned with general populists to give a government a huge 82 seat majority. If Labour disintegrates into two parties, as well as losing Scotland and Wales, there is no way back from that and we've got a lifetime of Tory rule to endure.
Doesn't matter who's the leader of Labour, the media are in the Tories pockets and will spin spin all day long for Boris. Let's say I was the Labour leader, I put forward real change and transformational policies. What would happen is they attack my accent and background. They'd say I'm not true working class person, make some comments about me buying quilted bog roll or say I shop at M&S not Aldi. They'd attack me for being work class, and the working class would love it. Totally forgetting that they'd instead vote for a cabal of self serving posh boys without a clue who rip off the tax payer daily. What a time to be alive.
The last Labour leader did, it was a radical manifesto but we are where we are as HIS own party was as bad as the media. They own this mess.
They have HMS Trincomalee, the oldest remaining floating warship at the National Museum of the Royal Navy. I can recommend a visit!
Of course it’s not helpful but that’s what the centrists have done to the party. They’ve split it. There’s a view of why should we support him when he didn’t support us & can you blame them? Corbyn put centrists in his shadow cabinet & tried to unite the party. Starmer’s done the exact opposite. ‘But Corbyn’ only became a thing when it wasn’t shot down by Labour MP’s. It wasn’t a thing at first when he rejuvenated the party after the result under Milliband. You have to be united or you won’t succeed. Gove can’t stand Boris for example, he said he was unfit for leadership but once Boris won the leadership he got completely behind him. I don’t believe a centrist Labour Party can win an election, they got in under Blair but his legacy is completely tarnished & he’s hated by many after Iraq. Brown & Milliband showed the people wanted something different & they got that in 2017 with a huge increase in Labour voters. That should’ve been something to build on. Instead it was destroyed by Labour MP’s & staff more interested in stopping a Socialist government than a Tory one. I’m not saying Corbyn was perfect or anything like that. I think he would be the first to admit he wasn’t a natural leader but he should have had the support of the party & we should’ve had a Labour victory in 2017. And even if he had the lefts support Starmer can’t win an election currently as he needs to get some of the people who voted leave back on board but he’s never even acknowledged this. 50 of the 52 seats that went from Red to Blue in 2019 were leave seats. While ever he blames Corbyn & talks about a new leadership he won’t win them back.
