It was a good read unfortunately we live in a world where people drive round in cars that people think were manufactured with steel components conjured up by Bob Daniels.
And who do the 70% of Labour Remain voters transfer their votes to? Whilst ever they* can keep the electorate talking along Brexit lines, they’ll keep the Tories in power. It’s simple maths, it’s irrefutable and yet it seems the majority of the population hasn’t cottoned on. *Ive no idea who ‘they’ are but they’re having a right laugh and still spending money agitating this sh it.
Because climate change isn't hysteria, it's not vineyards in Glasgow either, it's the possibility of the Earth turning into ******* Venus, scientists are saying it, not sleazy politicians. And clean coal my arse, the only technology that was going to make it clean was effectively hiddieing the CO2 underground until someone worked out how to deal with it.
The middle class remainers Momentum you mean , if you think they are an extreme left group you probably thought Oswald Mosley was just a bit right of centre.
All the elements of the party will claim it’s the fault of not following their agenda . There’s just no excuse for voting Tory
I'd say that is a lot of reasons offered for not voting labour, with very little offered to say why votes went tory. But that seems to be answered in some of the language used, which comes straight from the Johnson gaslighting book.
70% of traditional Labour voters are remainers. It’s a fact (but even if it was only 40% you’d get the same result) Whilst ever people are divided on Brexit lines, Labour can’t rally enough votes to win most seats. It’s a polar issue, there’s no nuance, and until we’ve suffered the worst of it (or indeed, reaped it’s benefits) enough to start changing minds, there’s no answer for Labour. It’s simple maths, the vast majority of traditional Tory voters are Brexiteers, Lib Dem remainers, but the Labour vote is split catastrophically.
Think this is the key issue for Labour. They have two sets of voters, the middle class and the working class which are completely incompatible with one another. The middle class want caring forward-thinking policies on all issues, from social care, to healthcare and indeed the environment. They have the means so that basic survival and putting food on the table isn't a consideration. The working class want quick fixes to end decades of neglect which has lead to reduced living standards in real terms, increased poverty and whole towns with no hope. They don't give a flying f*** if these policies are green, blue, left or right, they don't care about aid for the developing world, about coal mines poisoning the environment they want simple policies that will improve their quality of life, right here, right now. They don't have the means, so basic survival and food on the table is very much an issue. Labour need to provide these populist policies to win the working-class vote and it needs to be done with an Angela Raynor-esque* northern accent. I'm a huge Keir Starmer fan, but can't shake the feeling that to beat Boris, you need a salt of the earth northerner who is passionate and who cares at the helm.
I said I wouldn't reply to political threads anymore, but, Kier Starmer was a disastrous punt as leader of the Labour Party, part of the London elite, no clue about the country outside London, completely out of touch with the traditional Labour voter. The London Labour bubble needs to be burst and the Labour Party must elect a leader that puts London second and the rest of the country first, and I mean the entire British family.
I get what you're saying, but there will be crossover between groups. Just because someone is working class it doesn't mean they can't be deeply concerned about climate change too. The last parts of your post point to personality politics. For all DePfeffels shocking flaws and failings as a human being, there are enough people who like him. They like his mocking of people, they like his xenophobia, they like his class warfare, they like attacks on foreigners (verbally, for now), they like the thought of not having foreigners in the country (for now) and so on. You take that mouthpiece away, the facade of DePfeffel and the house of cards might not collapse, but it might wobble. I don't think a northern accent will work. If it works in the north, it won't work in the south. Someone has to appeal to all. Blair did it spectacularly and he wasn't northern at all, but he was a fantastic orator and would absolutely run rings round our current incumbent. I thought the tories would get rid of him quickly, but given these results, I think theres little chance of that unless he's convicted of criminality.
For sure, there is crossover. Just sadly no where near enough to win an election. I don't think the middle class would be against a northern leader. But absolutely a great orator is worth his/her weight in gold.
For some crazy reason Boris seems popular , and the working class intent on getting Brexit done have clicked onto him. It’s become like following a football team and nothing about politics . People are just supporting Boris on similar terms as following a footy team . Absolutely bonkers and it’s why the country’s fkd
I think Starmer would be a good PM. He's decent, he's got good ability for detail, but he's not got personality, and nowadays, a GE for too many people is a vote on x factor. He may well unpick Johnson if allowed time once things turn and pain is felt, but I can't help but feel you need a voice of compassion against a cowardly bullying liar. Maybe a female voice. Not one of the ranters like Long Bailey, but someone like Stella Creasey. Ed Milliband would be better now, he got the gig too soon. Yvette Cooper has got talent galore and should have been leader in my view, she tore DePfeffel to bits at the select committee. The problem is as the seats dwindle, you lose potential candidates, good ones and you've less scope to choose a good leader. Its highly likely Milliband and Cooper will lose their seats at the next time of asking too.
Is that the usual suspects who think "it'll all work art orlreight an anyway climate change dun't affect me. Allus matters is wiv got ridda Brussels" Those usual suspects?
And for the first time that I’ve ever done this un-ironically But Corbyn was also all those things. Starmer isn’t the problem here; it’s not even the fact that there are more competing factions within the Labour party than there are members of the Tory party. It’s plain and simple - whilst ever Brexit is a major talking point, Labour loses a massive chunk of voters. There’s no way back from that until Brexit is concluded.
