The people wanted to see Brexit implemented, not re-run or cancelled. That's where we are now. I reckon Boris is possibly getting an easy ride at the moment on Brexit because of the effects of Covid19.

For the benefit of those on the left of the Labour party I'll give you this
    LLLLTBWTBWTBWLLLL.
It aint rocket science when Labour leaves the centre ground and drifts left it loses when it has a leader who drags it to the centre it wins. The left can stamp their feet and shout and scream and tell everybody they are wrong as much as they want but with their influence keeping the labour party on the left of politics we won't see a Labour government. Labour has lost the working class vote because the white working class thinks rightly or wrongly that the Labour party cares more about places like Palestine than it does about Hartlepool.

The majority of people didn't, but lets not reopen the brexit can of worms again.

Too late, you’ve already opened it

the majority of people who could be bothered to vote wanted brexit done and that is what counts

Not true. A vote to leave the EU was conducted. There was no secondary referendum or other mechanism to define what sort of Brexit or what guidance for negotiations. They didn't say how or on what terms. The truth remains that any suggestion of what that vote implied as an outcome is completely subjective.

I'm afraid it wasn't a vote on anything other than whether we left or not. Which it could be argued was a bit drastic. But there we are. Or were.

Give up, we were asked leave or remain, we were told by practically all politicians it was a once in a lifetime vote, no going back etc etc

I literally screamed the morning Cameron announced the referendum. It was obvious to anyone with an ounce of common sense that the single binary question would achieve the opposite of his intention.

Precisely. So asserting what sort of brexit was due to be "done" is pure speculation and trying to rewrite the years of debacle we fell into as a result of one of the worst constructed referendums conceived.

And yet if you ask 20 people what the outcome was likely to be, you’ll get 25 different answers.

Precisely, We were asked if we wanted to leave or remain. Not how. The voting ballot had two options. Unless I misplaced a secondary form which asked my opinions of custom unions and single markets.

And before you say you have to leave everything to have technically left the EU.... Switzerland are not an EU country. Yet they are part of Schengen and in the single market.

I understand that, it was a flawed referendum in that sense, but a majority voted for it. We are where we are politically because of the reluctance of remain leaning politicians to accept that it was the will of the people. "Didn't understand the implications, been conned, need to explain how it will impact on their lives" etc. etc. They have lost their trust and unfortunately that tips the balance to the Tory filth. I didn't want us to leave, but it's too late now, we have left. I'm sure we will rejoin in the future in some form or other if it doesn't work out.

Ah yes, the will of the peoples republic of Brexit, from a non binding referendum, with covered up fraud galore, russian interference et al.

If only we could do grown up referendums like Switzerland.

    a tad o/t -
Labour doing very well in Wales - possible majority in the Senedd - first time ever that one party has had a majority.
Constituencies which went blue at the last election now back to red.
Main reason seems to be that Mark Drakeford Labour leader has done a good job in handling Covid in Wales.

Result is that some constituencies have a Labour member in the Senedd and a Tory MP in Westminster.

And yet many have voted conservative totally opposite to what they believed in previously and don’t tell me that the the Tory’s believe in the same things .
Hartlepool have gone the way the media directed and nobody can tell me any different , they were writing en masse about labour losing long before ,they we’re putting the thought into peoples minds like an hysteria and likewise all those who keep saying they’re
not media influenced have been media influenced .
When Murdoch turns on Boris will be the time he goes .

Personally I think the current Government are protected at the moment and it's unfair (or at least misleading) to judge Starmer on the basis of a by-election result at this time.

Without covid, Brexit would be the 'only game in town' and politics would be all about whether the government were doing a good job of it or not, and Labour could present to the nation their view of how they would do better for the country. Covid changes everything.

We've got a Tory government doling out cash left right and centre. And people see Boris and co taking action against Covid - whether you agree with all their actions or not, it's at times like these the general public tend to get behind the leadership, whereas the opposition seem less relevant through no real fault of their own.

At the same time, it's given some positives for Brexiteers as Boris and friends can talk about how well we're doing with vaccines compared to the EU and create an impression that if we were still in the EU we'd be ****ed.

What we really need from Labour now are strategies for how we rebuild post-covid, and convincing the public that it's a better strategy than anything the Tories have to offer. Just remember Churchill lost the general election immediately after WW2.
