Tough call on who to start. I think Woodrow and Dike have to start, and Morris has been so good from the bench that it might be worth starting him as a sub. I'd go Woodrow, Dike, Chaplin. hopefully Chaplin can come into a streak of form just in time for the playoffs! Starting him again might do him good Val will probably surprise us and start Adeboyejo and Frieser though, and tbf he usually gets it right!
It's Dike and Morris that are key. It doesn't matter too much who starts alongside whether that be Woodrow, Frieser or Chaplin. I like Woodrow but think there's sumat missing from his game this season. He isn't first name on the team sheet after Mowatt for me anymore.
With no malice intended I`m glad you don`t pick the team. Cauley`s contribution and work rate is key to our play.
I'm not sure that table tells us a great deal at all really. With 6 forwards and so many possible formulations, it waters down the amount of time those partnerships have. The best 3 pressers are Chaplin, Woodrow and Frieser. But I doubt Swansea will look to play a passing game after the horror show that was the Oakwell "spectacle". I'd probably start with Woodrow, Morris and Chaplin. But perm any 3 of 6.
Both games against Swansea in the League we had nothing at stake. Our season hadn't taken hold yet and our only target was avoiding relegation at the time. It would have been interesting to play them later in the season during our good run when our aspirations were a little higher with more confidence. We'll get that chance on Monday and Saturday next week.
As above, the sample size throughout is too small to do anything measurable with. And goals scored isn’t even the whole point of our front 3. But with our ‘data driven’ club, it does open up the question of how much data is derived from the players telemetry vs how much the pick is based on Vals raw observations of the players.
Dike, Chaplin & Adeboyejo for the first 20 minutes. At 4-0 up, we can sub Adeboyejo for Morris and make it 6 or 7 by the end of the match.
Woodrow and Chaplin either side of Dike for me. Morris first sub on. Carltons actually my fave but he does seem to do serious damage from the bench. I actually think Freiser does a really good job when he plays but can’t pick em all!!
It doesn"t really prove anything as those combinations are sometime come together at different stages of a game , for example ,players used as subs coming on late in a game playing with fresh legs against tired defenders are more likely to make an impact , the only way you can make any comparisons are if each combination start & finish a game playing the full 90 minutes . I fully trust Val to make the right call, he knows who to use at the beginning of games & knows how to change when change is needed , different games bring different circumstances , horses for courses as they say but you cannot say that any one combination will get you more goals than another combination ,because simply no two games are alike .
The two things that it tells me are: with the exception of a 5 min stint that led to a goal, all other combinations that average 2 or more goals per 90 involve Morris Woodrow and Dike are probably competing for the same spot in the middle, alongside Morris and Frieser/Chaplin to do the pressing. I’d bring dike off the bench in the first leg, and Woodrow off the bench in the second. At least that means he’s on the pitch if it goes to penalties
Apart from Woodrow/Chaplin/Frieser at the top, but good point otherwise. Definitely need Cauley on at the end of the second game.
