When I heard this last night I felt shattered. It brought back a memory that I had forgotten. I was at the game when he made his debut for us, and it was the first game I had ever seen where I was older than one of the players. I am so sorry for your loss; it is a big loss for the Club and for all who saw him play, and who saw him standing next to Danny in the Premier. RiP.
Gutted. Unbelievably sad news. Legend doesn't even begin to do him justice. Best wishes to all the family.
Sincerest condolences from me and Laura. We had the pleasure of meeting Eric in the Prince of Wales at Greasbrough. He nipped in to have quick pint whilst he waited for his Chinese. A lovely bloke who had time to chat to us both. It was just after Laura had George and he wished us well for the future. Laura was in aww when I told her of his great exploits at Barnsley Football Club. Laura commented what a polite person he was. R.I.P.
So sorry to hear of your loss, a lot of my very favourite BFC memories involve Eric. As others have rightly said the man is a legend. Thoughts are with you and your family.
I've only one first hand memory to share of the man. I must have been about 14 and went into the old ramshackle office for an away ticket, nobody else was before me. Michael Spinks was on duty and Eric Winstanley squeezed in just after me. Michael Spinks turned and looked at him and asked him what he could do for him. Eric without hesitation put his hands on my shoulders and said, "You can sort this young man out first". Small actions can make someone decent beyond words. I don't have any more interactions to share sadly, as much as I wish I did.
A memory I have of Big Eric shows the care he had for his players. When watching a training session at Queens Ground, at a time when you could stand on the side of the pitch, there were three men stood there, showing off to one another, by mocking some of the players, Ian Banks in particular, who was suffering much from the abuse. Eric had had enough. I watched as he stopped the session, strode across to these three on the touchline, gave them short shrift and ordered them off the training ground. There was silence as the whole squad watched in relief and respect for their coach.
When we got promoted to the Premiership in '98, I remember Eric being interviewed and saying, "people think Barnsley are a small club, well , i'll tell you what, were not small any more". R.I.P Barnsley F.C Legend.
I will never forget your father as a fantastic player, a developer of other players, both young and experienced. I am genuinely upset to hear the news this morning. Condolences to all your family. Legend is a word that is often misused, but this is the passing of a true and real Barnsley legend.
One things for sure, you can bet Rimmo was waiting for him when those gates opened. They'll be having a right old natter now
Winnie I'm so sorry for your loss. Deepest sympathies to you, Mark and all your family. I didn't see your Dad play but I almost feel like I did. I've heard so many stories recounted by our fans of their hero Eric during his playing days. I also think back to all those players that I've heard speaking at events over the years who were coached by Eric. The amount of respect, love and thanks for what he taught them and how he pushed them to be as good as they could be. So many great stories and such a big impact on Barnsley FC and the Barnsley community. RIP Eric, Legend
Think your memory is faulty, we got promoted in 1997 Not entirely sure this is the right thread for tongue in cheek pedantry....
Agreed, not the right time to be correcting people's memories on here. Everyone is obviously very sad and downhearted today. The world is a poorer place without Eric. Once again RIP Eric
I've genuinely sat ages thinking what to write in this thread. And I can't. Sometimes you can't think what to write because it's already been said in spades. Just echo what everyone else has said, and to offer my deepest sympathy to all family and friends. Rest easy, Eric, and Andrew, you have seen the warmth and help that this BBS can serve, I wouldn't think twice about asking for support from this place if you need it
