Its a difficult one. Its not always a case that players go purely because of greed. Most will want to play on the biggest platform, with the most fans, and back their ability to progress and do it. I don't think any of our past players, at the moment of signing for another club have instantly thought, I'm set for life, i'll take it easy now. How it may have panned out over time with lack of opportunities may suggest differently. All of them took steps up the ladder at the time they left us. I can't criticise them for that.
True, but don't underestimate how much the money side rules as a priority over football for players. I agree though that they don't expect to take the money and then not have to play for it.
Oh absolutely. And there will have been plenty of players who having been elevated to a higher level and paid more than their previous level that will decide they want to receive all of that amount rather than step back down for a considerable pay cut. We've probably a few in our squad doing such a thing. And frankly, its completely understandable and I doubt few of us would do differently.
As much as I love Mowatt, and hate to admit it, I think Leeds ambition would be beyond his level. I can see Sheff Utd level club coming for him and being able to double his wages,
Presumably Heckingbottom will still be there in some capacity. I wouldn't want to be working with a bloke who farmed me off to Oxford after I'd been an established Championship player at Leeds. I personally wouldn't want to be anywhere near anyone who stalled my career for a season.
Surprised no one has mentioned Stoke for him. Coates have already agreed to a clear out and to back ONeil this Summer.
In the cold light of day the Championship has some big clubs. Just finishing 5th won't get us players over Derby County, Forest and Stoke. I like what Dane said about scouring the American market. We have to think outside the box.
This 100%. I was once on a night out with a group of players from another club, and got speaking with one of them. He was a forward who had played in the Championship most of his career, with the odd season in the top flight. We were talking football, and I mentioned that one of our players who was having a great season was linked with a move elsewhere(can't remember exactly who it was now), and I mentioned how I think it would be a mistake to leave the club at that point and went on to list players who had left Oakwell and it didn't work out. He shot back that it's a no-lose situation for them, though. They move on, sign a contract that, if they looked after their money right will mean after 3 years they will have enough money in the bank to be able to choose their own career once football is gone(rather than having to just take anything as they need the money). If it works out, he then has the next x number of years on top money and playing at the highest level. If it didn't work out though, he still had the money from his 3 years on a big contract, and there will be a whole host of Championship clubs waiting and willing to take him back at that level(and on more than he would have been earning at Barnsley. On the other hand, if he had stayed with us, he might have had a modest increase in wages(though not life changing), but if he got a bad injury, or went off the boil he'd missed his big chance of a payday. I'm not saying that player will move at some point for footballing reasons(Harry Kane, for instance!), but at this level especially, football is their sole source of income, so you can't blame them for wanting to maximize it while they can.
Lol, I'm never one for slating players as you know and I'm not going to start with Mowatt but a sense of reality has to be employed too. He's a good Championship midfielder.
Am upset mate because he said he wanted to see how ambitious we were before commiting to a new contract, most people would av red it, just dont say anything at all, were a selling club everybody knows it but weve only sold 1 first teamer in last 3 windows thats ambition in itself in my eyes. I dont like the fact hes sayin hes leavin cos weve no ambition, its unsettling,i dont blame him for going for more money just dont blame board, lets see where he ends up.
Was in reference to the tone of your posts. Which appear a little bitter and angry. If that’s not the case that’s how it came over. To me anyway. Irrespective. I’ve made what I believe a statement that would fit any positive/negative reply. On this thread. He’s looking after himself. It could well backfire. I think the club are a lot wiser of the ins and outs. (pardon the pun) than they were, when they took over, regarding transfer policies.
Am not looking for it lv unless i have to but last time they had contract negotiations he said it then, just thought it was a bit poor when he didn't have to say ought.somebody will help me find it if i have to unless they want me to look like a bell but i dont even know how to pass threads on or ought but 1000 per cent it got said.
Can anyone else be a superstar here pls and fetch it up or at least mention that theyve red it.pls cos it put me off alex and i no av red it.
