Peterborough deliberately play a style of football that should, in theory, mean your star strikers score a lot of goals. It hasn't led to success on the pitch until now in terms of getting out of League One, but they use statistics just like everyone else. This lad who's banged them in this season wasn't actually wanted by Ferguson, but the Chairman convinced him otherwise based on his conversion rate on chances and the stats he was seeing. Chairman proved right on this occasion. I don't think we'd recruit exactly like last season but the strategy remains the same. For the plan/model to work, when you move any high performers on you then reinvest it at a higher level then the season before. I'm not sure there's anything to suggest a Premier League youth player will be any better than a high performer from League One, but I'll let the recruitment team figure that one out. It's just interesting that we're talking about 'how' we replace the best players, but when we recruited those players none of us knew they'd perform anything like they have. I like Cauley but I've been surprised at how slow he's looked this season. His goals return would suggest he's a c. £5 million Championship striker, but his performances wouldn't suggest them (imo).
Just had a quick look. Over the last 15 seasons, Brentford & Peterborough's top scorers from each season have scored 590 goals between them. Phenomenal.
I guess for me, my assumption is that coaching in the PL is more about technical ability, and being surrounded by players with more technical ability. I imagine L1 coaching is less about that and more about intensity. Obvious trade-off is that L1 players likely get more exposure to 'proper' football than the PL fringe players. So there's a learning curve there. I've banged on about it enough this season, and I know plenty will disagree, but I really do think we've missed something creatively. Whether it's time on the ball, going past a man, creativity in midfield, finding a pass, bit of composure, clinical finishing. Call it what you want. On many occasions that's been an obvious gap for me. Might be down to our coaching, or match tactics, or ability. Truth is probably somewhere in between. I imagine we're more likely to find some of that latent technical ability from fringe players at PL clubs, than at lower league ones. I'm not going all Hemsy here. I don't want to see us sign half a dozen 16 year olds from Chelsea. I'd just like to see more technique and craft than I did this season.
I feel very optimistic that we can keep more players then usual due to the Covid situation and the financial constraints on the usual suspects who overspend, my only worry is if one of the relegated teams fancies anyone - they will have serious wonga still. So I hope only Mowatt goes from regular first team and I think we have cover.
We had the least money so it was to be expected we had the 3rd lowest budget in the championship but people were still moaning wanting us to play tika taka barca stuff.
I wasn't I just wanted us to make better use of the ball when we weren't under pressure and look up occasionally before kicking it forward.
And neither of those two players were anything like ready for the role they were brought in to do at the time. If the incomings that summer had included players like Morris, Helik and Brittain, Stendel might still be the coach. I just hope the three main lessons from that transfer window are; 1) don't lose multiple players from the same position (Pinnock, Lindsay, Jackson) 2) Replace with players that have a chance, and have some first team games behind them and 3) don't leave Conway in charge of it.
Yeah we could have done at times but I cant be too harsh on the tactics or the players we were narrowly beaten in the play off by a team still receiving parachute payments with a wage budget that would dwarf ours. Over the 2 legs collins didn't have out to do apart from pick the ball out of the net twice.
I don't think there is anyone who wants us to play such a style, or if so, but a handful. I don't think there are many that are against the pressing style either. That seems to suit the battling Barnsley mantra we've heard for generations. But every Barnsley team I've seen, even those that had players who had many more limitations, there has always been an effort and intent to find a player if they had opportunity to do so. That can't be said about this team this season, and that's what frustrates and dismays some of us.
A little bit chicken and egg though isn't it? If we'd have done that, which I agree at times was an option, then how many times might we have got it wrong and left ourselves open to being picked off? The whole system is designed to get the best out of the players at our disposal. I think Morris, Woodrow, Styles, Brittain and Mowatt have plenty of finesse. Some of Palmer's close control is superb. I also think that Swansea are really good at making the opposition look poor - we'd have probably looked like a better team against a Bournemouth or Brentford, but easily could have been blown away in the first leg such is the quality they have.
let’s be honest he was pretty poor for us but will be interesting to see if he can translate League 1 form into the Championship. I hope so as he’s had a tough life
He was but he didn't get the chance that say ritzmaier did where he got started week in week out for 5 months playing awful. I think he should be able to look at ivan toney this time last year he was getting written off "he won't score in Championship" "if he's worth 6million whats cauley worth" broke the record for top scorer in Championship and one game away from a premiership player.
I’m certainly not writing his career off. I think he’s a talented lad but his time with us for whatever reason was very poor. Both things can be true.
Play to your strengths our plan was get the ball up field play the football in there half win the 2nd balls in defence clear your lines ASAP. I think that's one of the reasons mads suffered last season because struber had him receiving the ball on the 6 yard box trying to play it out asif he was Paulo Maldini inviting trouble
Between them Chaplin,Victor and Frieser have scored 9 goals this season, time for all 3 to be moved on and Schmidt and Simoes.
I reckon Halme still has a future with us. Very young still, and has rarely let us down. We just need to figure out what his best position is. For me Oduor is probably the biggest disappointment, as he looked excellent the times I saw him the season before last.
Team next season could be: Collins Halme, Anderson, Sollbauer J. Williams, Kane, Styles, Kitching Chaplin, Morris, Frieser
