Just seen that shortly it will be perfectly legal to carry and conceal a handgun in public without a license in Texas.

Well, thats one less place in America I'll be travelling to.

Seems ludicrous to me in a country that has regular mass shootings - but what would we know over here- we’ve only had a few in many decades - o that’s probably because we acted immediately to curb gun ownership when the tragedies happened

I find it equally bizarre (if the wording of your post is correctly indicating it) that anyone could walk around with a concealed gun on their person just by having a licence.

They can also shoot you and have a reasonable chance of getting away with it if they claim they felt threatened.
We have relatives in New York State so I can't say I won't go there but other than that the USA as a destination is completely out for me, the country is a complete mess.

A few weeks ago, over one weekend, 400 people were shot and killed in the US by fire arms.

    It’s absolutely insane.

When I went to Orlando, a few years ago. I got talking to a Texan, who was on a business trip. Seemed a nice enough guy, told me he had family in Derby, so was vaguely aware of where I was from.

Eventually the topic of guns came up, he owned several, as did his 13 year old son. His defence was, he's taught his son how to respect the gun, and therefore had no problems with him owning one. When I pointed out that gun crime in the UK was fairly low, because people generally don't have access to them, he said, guns aren't the problem, people are. If someone wants to kill someone, they'll find a way to do it.

The lengths that people go to, to prove they're right knows no bounds.

So what he's effectively saying is there's a far higher percentage of stupid, homicidal people in the USA. Great argument. :)

If I lived over there I would have a pistol, not because i want to kill innocent people for absolutely no reason but defend myself and family against lunatics who do.

And what percentage of occasions would you have to effectively use it? The vast majority I'd suggest it would be too late. If someone pulls a gun on you by the time you try to draw yours you'd be dead. Also gun ownership clearly doesn't solve the problem as their problem is clearly way, way out of control.
Personally if I lived there my solution would be to take my family and live somewhere else.

    You’d fit in well then.

That’s the kind of flawed logic that kills 400 people in 2 days.

Not all people are lunatics when they buy a gun. Some become lunatics for one moment for lots of different reasons.

That's the nail firmly on the head. In my life I can think of two occasions where due to circumstances I completely lost control of myself. Luckily all I had was my hands, and on one of them I rightly got put on my backside.
The most sensible and rational of people can lose control of themselves, having access to a gun in those moments is a recipe for disaster.

If someone broke into my house here in the UK with a bladed weapon I would if given the chance use a knife on them to protect myself, it doesn't mean the next day I would walk around aldi stabbing Barbara in the throat who was just buying a bag for life, I agree the gun laws in the states are bonkers in regards to being able to buy a high velocity, 30 round magazine, just why, but I 100% get people having them to prevent/ stop/ things like home invasions

They won't be happy until they are riding down main street and tying their horses up to the hitching rails again, and having high noon shoot outs!

Would you stab someone who was trying to stab you or any of your family

But you wouldn't need one if everyone else was prevented from owning one.

Basically what you've got in the US is a domestic arms race.

He's got a revolver so I'll buy a semi automatic pistol.
He's got a semi automatic pistol so I'll buy a scoped AR-15 with extended mags.

    Where does it end?

Crackers. I've really struggled to understand why the gun laws haven't been scrapped in America. I don't give a fk if it's in the Constitution. Things change. Lots of things all over the world used to be ok, that aren't anymore. I've got to assume it boils down to money and/or votes.

I'm sure @Loko the Tyke will be along soon with his Donald Trump vest on, to put me straight (JOKING LOKO!)

Daft isn't it. The right to bear arms covered muskets. A firearm that couldn't be concealed and even if you were highly trained with them you'd only be able to fire 2-4 rounds per minute.

Yeah, let's apply that law to weapons that are capable of firing 30 rounds in 30 seconds and only takes 4 seconds to reload. What's the worst that could happen?
