Ironically buying the pistol would put your family in greater danger of getting shot.

It's crazy, it's like a national blind spot where they all just can't/won't see sense.

Maybe someone should re-write the constitution, see how it scans?

"I have the right to bear an AK-47 assault rifle, with a muzzle velocity of 700 metres per second and a burst fire of 100 rounds per minute". Has a ring to it.

AK-47 isn't American, so that amendment will never get the votes needed!

Do you honestly think that if an armed robber enters your house you're less likely to end up getting shot if you have a gun yourself?

If a robber has a gun it's generally as a precaution given that he's robbing a house in a country where anyone might be tooled up to the nines. If you run out brandishing a gun you're forcing him to use it.

Your first sentence is what im
If you had access to a pistol and you clearly identified someone breaking into your house and you identified what you believed to be a hand gun ( it could be fake, but you wouldn't know) you don't know is intentions, would you use your pistol ?? ( if you had too to try and save your family or yourself)And if not what would you do? I'm not having a dig but their is no right or wrong answer,

Honestly, no I wouldn't. It's beyond daft to willingly bring about an armed confrontation where it might otherwise be avoided.

Yes you possibly would do all those things. I think that's the point though, isn't it? Putting a gun in your hand massively increases the likelihood of either you or them using it. It's like filling the fridge with ale then saying 'I drink in the house cos it's there'. Don't put beer in the fridge then.

When a shooting happens somewhere you'd think a guns amnesty would be the way forward so everyone can hand their weapons in at a particular place so there is less danger about. Instead when a shooting happens gun sales rise because people think they need one more than ever to protect themselves.

There is a risk of getting stabbed in on the street in the UK- do you follow your own logic and carry a knife round with you?

It’s not just the Yanks, as you’ll see in this thread, plenty of people all over the world can’t see the lack of logic*, and are instantly attracted by self defence.
People trust themselves more than they trust strangers. So having a gun in the house massively increases the chances one of your family will die as a result. But they still think it’s ‘protection’ from an unknown threat.

Their is a risk of crossing the road, their is a risk in practically everything in life we do, I don't know the stats but I should imagine gun crime in the states far outweighs knife crime (pro rata) than in the UK

Best thing if you have an intruder would be not to confront them. Waving a gun at them ups the stakes. What if you shoot and it's one of your own household sleepwalking or something?

There’s plenty in the USA think the gun laws are abhorrent ,maybe even in a one on one vote (which they’d never allow) anti gun laws would be passed .
There’s powerful lobbies stopping this happening among the them NRA etc .
There’s money to be made with guns and lots of it and plenty of the Rich in USA will have share some even unwittingly in pension funds etc .

If I found an intruder in my house I'd show them where are valuables are. Possessions can be replaced but lives cannot.

I bet, and this is just a guess, thats due to huge numbers of people who own guns...

I would never own a gun. However, I did once see a woman being interviewed in America on one of those anti firearms rallies and saying to the camera "The bigger the gun, the smaller the penis!" :D
Anyway, if I heard an intruder in our house, I'd go downstairs and confront them. As I sleep in the nude, they would have to witness my naked torso in all it's 'glory'! There's a terrible consequence for breaking into MY house! :D:D
