What do people see in Schmidt?

    For the past year I've been confused by the apparent desire online to keep him on.

    I mean, he literally touches the ball less than 5-10 times a match.

    Was it 3 goals last season?

    One bundled over the line from 3 yards out vs forest.

    One a tap in at 1-4 down vs Stoke.

    He's the opposite of Victor.
    Far too lightweight and doesnt have the workrate to compensate.

    The ironic thing about Schmidt is he got his chance without Woodrow linking up play and pressing and Morris running at defenders and holding the ball up. If he can't play alongside Woodrow and Morris under Valerien I'll hold my hands up and say I'm wrong.

    I don't rate him at all. He's done next to nothing in his loan spell back in Austria either.

    Winner against Millwall.
    Winner against Forest that enabled us to go to the final game with a chance of staying up.
    Assist against Brentford that kept us up.

    He's still work in progress and it might not work out in the long run but there is no doubt he has contributed to our success in the last year. At the very least he deserves another season.

    Yep, I think he's worth a go up front under Val. In my book he's a better version of the striker we all hoped Chaplin would be.

    If he comes back next season, gets a shot at the first team and blows it then I'll hold my hands up and admit I was wrong too.

    I am still happy to give him another chance under Val. I always look at what Toby has achieved since he came back and people were happy to write him off.

    I tend to jump to the defence of Patrick Schmidt, not because I think he's a 20 goal striker in waiting but that he gets a bit of a rough deal from some of our supporters. I don't buy in to the fact that he doesn't work hard because I never saw a lack of effort and only a lack of involvement, and that doesn't always point to the player being poor. One of the last games he started he spent the entire time he was on the pitch trying to win aerial battles with CBs much bigger than he is. He was never that kind of striker and always looked a nuisance when we played well, got the ball down the channels, and needed a striker who made runs in between the centre halves.

    I just think there's times this season when games have gone a certain way, that an option like Schmidt might have yielded something. But not many, because we finished 5th.

    His time in Austria on loan is very strange. One start as a striker and one goal, with his other start coming as a right midfielder (which I think we can all agree he isn't). Rest of the time he hasn't been near the squad. I'd have preferred him to have a League One loan but I guess with Covid it was an opportunity for him to be back in his homelands without quarantine and travel issues.

    Sorry but the lack of quality is there for all to see, he had plenty of chances, most notably Strubers first game in charge at Blackburn & it was clear to see he was a couple of leagues too high

    You are obviously on the wind up , the goal against Forest was a very goof finish & thankfully went a big way to keeping us up & when you say 5 to 10 touches a match , can you tell me how many 90 minute matches did he fully play to qualify that stat ? I do not know if he has a future with us or not but I do believe if he had had the same amount of game time as Victor, Frieser & Chaplin, playing as a striker, then his net goal return would have been more than those three put together, simply because the lad is a finisher .

    He came on as a sub against QPR in Valerien's first game and proceeded to miss a fair few chances. He led the line away at Cardiff, too.

    I thought his performance against Cardiff was very poor.
    Would be interested to see him have a close season under Val.

    Along with XI other very poor performances that day and Val admitting he got his team selection completely wrong (Frieser playing first half at RWB for example).

    He also played in a front three with Simoes and Chaplin. All our attacking options in the last five months have been infinitely better and the players more drilled. I think Schmidt could have shown similar progress and might still do. Definitely needs to toughen up though - or maybe he's as tough as he'll ever get.

    I struggle to see these types of players going anywhere given the money they are on.
    Too many clubs taking care of the purse strings. Not willing to gamble on unknown quantities. I'd be surprised if we would command a fee.
    I think there will be a lot of players throught the leagues reaching a mutual agreement with their clubs getting paid up so to speak. Then searching for new clubs willing to take em on with substantially lower wages.

    Scored some very important goals and assists .
    I’m happy to take the head coaches view on this one and go along with it but whatever happens I’d be of the opinion he owes us nothing .

    I think his experience with us should have toughened him up. He has genuine quality. Tried too hard against QPR because he was chomping at bit to impress US. There was nobody felt more for him that night and then his team mates threw him off a cliff at Cardiff. The reason his mare at Cardiff stood out so much was because he was the only player that got off the bus. Nowt came off for him but at least he had a go.

    Real shame for lad. When I have a go at Brittain I'm reined in by decent posters/friends and rightly so.

    I'd like people to afford same courteosy to Schmidt/ Ritzmaier, Christie Davies, Kane. If they aren't good enough after a run under Val. Fair enough.

    Other comment to make here is that Schmidt is on a hiding to nothing anyway if fans are of the view that it was a bundled in finish from three yards against Forest. Superb first touch and then an instinctive quick finish that meant it had hit the back of the net before the keeper had even thought about where to go for it.
