We've a lot to thank him for. One hell of a lot. But the QPR game removed the belief that he was a nailed on finisher. Or even a half nailed on finisher. Could have been a bad day at the office, because he's not really had many other chances that he hasn't done something with. He's not a player who shows for the ball in build up play though. So it's scoring or nowt.
Sadly, some fans will never give players a chance. I do not profess to be a great football strategist, and I bow down to all the great wanabee football managers on here, but to write players off that are not given a full run in the team or just because they have a $hite first touch is absolutely crazy. How many of Schmidt’s critics said exactly the same about Mads, Brittan and Toby?
To be fair, he’s scored 3 in 37. You can hardly blame people for suggesting he’s not a Championship quality striker.
but what starts did he have and how many minutes has he played. I have come to the conclusion that some Barnsley fans are very fickle and also extremely quick to write players off. If it doesn’t work out then so be it, but at least give players a chance. I am sure that Conor’s return in the last season is very close to Schmidt’s, but I would also say that he is a decent player that has a lot to offer
Think I fall into his camp. Valerian has transformed the entire team. If he fails under him, then fair enough. I never thought I'd be impressed with sibbick, and here we are. Like a new signing
Can’t agree. I think 37 appearances is a reasonable amount to judge whether a player is up to standard or not. I don’t think that’s being fickle. Obviously I’d love him to prove me wrong, but based on what I’ve seen I’d be surprised if he did.
As I said, are those 37 appearances full games or cameo appearances? That makes all the difference to his return.
Sorry to those who disagree with me here but Schmidt isn't good enough. Frieser ain't good enough and Adeboyejo ain't good enough. None of the above have the necessary quality at this level. An occasional decent shot or an occasional corking through ball do not compensate for the longer term mediocrity which all of the above have shown. There could be improvement in future of course but at the moment they do not appear to be good enough in my humble opinion.
Can I ask if you said the same about Mads, Toby or Brittan when they signed or during their first season? I am one for giving players a chance, if they don’t succeed then so be it, but at least give them an opportunity. The fact that he is on the retained list would suggest that the management team also would like to give him another chance/opportunity. I can bet that there are also people who thought that Morris would be a waste of money given the clubs he has had, but how wrong are they now
Mads - awful start, everyone would agree. COVID the best thing that happened for him, turned it round Toby - always thought he looked decent, personally would have stuck with him. Wasn’t at all surprised he came good Brittain - pretty much slotted straight in for me. Hit the ground running. No comparison Morris - explosive. Best signing in many years. No comparison as a striker. I’m not digging Schmidt out, I just don’t think he’s even close to Championship level. I do think he’s had enough chance. Certainly as much as Morris had.
The major thing we have to remember is that these players are extremely young and the pressure must be immense on them. I completely agree with your comments but I think Partick deserves another season to prove himself: if it doesn’t work out then so be it. It will be interesting to see if he gets a full run in the team, I doubt it given those ahead of him but in Val we trust.
Stats for this season. 100% shot accuracy, better goals per minute ratio than Chaplin, Adeboyejo and Frieser. Courtesy of BBC Sport.
There was also that other one who many wrote off after one appearance, what’s his name, Dyche or something, oh I remember, Dike, Daryl Dike. I quite liked him.
Isn’t the fact he is on the retained list just down to the fact he’s still under the contract that he signed when he joined us?
Tbf those stats could really be spun any way you wanted. What does 100% shot accuracy even mean? Goal conversion is 11%, with just 1 goal. Even Elliott Simoes has a better minutes per goal ratio. That shot accuracy doesn’t seem to mean much at all.
Odejayi scored winner against Chelsea. Isgrove scored in playoff final Hardly a sign of a prolific scorer is it?
Just pointing out that if you want shut of Schmidt you may as well get rid of the entire strike force bar Woodrow and Morris. Simoes, Chaplin, Frieser, Adeboyejo and Schmidt all ended with very similar stats, unfair to point the finger at just one.
