A 75% fit Grealish is the first name on the team sheet for me. This generation's Gascoigne. He'll have games where he's a passenger, but he'll have games where he's unplayable.
I would agree with most of that. I would probably have Trippier at right back after winning La Liga. He's out of form but I would still find a place for Rashford.
I really rate Grealish. But I would still prefer a fully fit Sancho who is bang in form himself over a 75% fit Grealish.
Mount, Foden and Kane are the players to shape this team around. Grealish has done well but we haven't seen him enough over the last three months or on the big stage to make him the first name on the team sheet. Not as impressive as Foden but impressive none the less.
If England are 1-0 down in stoppage time in the Final and the ball drops kindly for him on the edge of the 18 yard box what are you thinking?
I think you're probably right when he does the job he does for Liverpool. Often flattered to deceive for England, which has been the problem for a lot of players over the years. He's also coming in to this having not played football for four months and 50/50 with starting the first game. I worry that if Maguire breaks down we look lightweight through the heart of defence and midfield.
(4-3-3) Henderson (D) Walker, Stones, Maguire, Chilwell Henderson (J), Mount, Foden Sancho, Kane, Sterling
I know. Another sign of how weak we in the heart of the team is that Reece James is seen as a better option flexing to be a CM than picking another CM in the squad. If Southgate can get the front players firing we'll be ok. But if we persist with the two holding players against teams that want to sit back it could become infuriating to watch as we waste the talent further up the pitch.
In fairness Walker has played as a central defender quite well. The need to have a big lad who wins everything in the air at the back is less critical in international football.
I can picture Kane, Sterling, Mount and Foden tripping over each other with Phillips and Rice pinging long balls forward . Kane getting fed up and going back into the midfield to link up play. Foden or Sterling peeling off wide and putting balls into the box and Kane blowing out of his arse being nowhere near them.
There's nothing wrong with Kane dropping deep. He's such a good footballer you want him involved. The issue is when he does drop deep and you've got two holding midfielders, it becomes compact if the other two front men don't advance or the full backs/wing backs offer the width. He can make as many goals as he scores but it relies on the whole team comign together - Foden and Mount will run past him which is why they need to be the first names on the team sheet.
