I hope the English officials/ premier league/ FA or whoever runs the VAR in this county are watching this tournament closely! This tournament has proved VAR can run smoothly when not run by incompetent fools. Decisions are made in seconds and not over 4 minutes. Penalties haven’t been given for silly hand balls like they do in the prem either. That offside then for example, done and dusted in no time. The prem would still be reviewing it now. I hope they take notes and implement this system next season.
I was confused with one decision earlier this week. A guy was yards offside, but then Clatternburg said something about the defender attempting to play the ball, so he played him onside. I forget the game and exact details, but it was something like the above.
I’ll be honest I must’ve missed that incident. I do recall a similar incident to what you described happening in the premier league last season.
It was Lukaku first goal. He was offside when the initial ball was played but because the defender intentionally played it and effed up, that was seemingly a new phase of play so he was inside as the ball was played by the defender. I assume if the ball had just hit the defender and fallen to Lukaku, he would have been offside.
Cheers! That's the one. It just looked strange to me and the official explanation didn't help. I wish they'd just simplify the whole offside rule for old fogies like me. Also, VAR shouldn't disallow goals because someone's fringe was blown into an offside position by a gust of wind. It needs to be a little more relaxed.
I think if it had happened at Oakwell, 99% of the crowd would be up in arms as nobody would know it as a rule.
Are you referring to the Mbappe offside? If so I thought they handled it well, he’s offside the goal gets chalked and they were underway again in under a minute. Well it seemed like they were. The prem would’ve been showing replays of all angles and dodgy lines. When it’s clear he’s off. I would always prefer us to scrap VAR all together, but unfortunately it’s obviously here to stay and how it’s used in this tournament is streets ahead of the premier league.
I watched the England game from just before the goal and remarked to my partner Anne that I was surprised they weren't using VAR. Then blow me in the next game a goal was rightly chalked off . The idiots running the system in the Prem need to take note.
Twas tongue in cheek as that’s about the longest pause I’d seen so far. You’re absolutely right, it’s not VAR that’s at fault but the way the EPL have been using it. We’ve seen other major tournaments using VAR though and the penny doesn’t seem to have dropped with the EPL yet.
The standard of refs at this tournament has been light years ahead of the shambolic refereeing we see here. The FA, PL and EFL, seriously need to address the problem in English football.
They should just simplify the offside rule in a way that people can easily understand it.Maybe something like ooohhh. …,,THE WAY IT BLOODY WAS
