Unpaid. Classic. Can't even pay minimum wage.

    Wonder what hours they'd expect.

I'm sure there was significant disapproval of unpaid interns recently. Wonder if the same disapproval will be levelled at the club too?

The practice of unpaid interns is $hite. Either pay them or do it yourself.

I'd love to hear some justification or explanation from the club as to why they are asking (presumably local) people to work for nothing. Especially as the club has framed itself as being a vital part of the community.

Have we retained an interest in Whitey's future?

If you read the adverts, they are all for the u23s and under 18s.

We are safe. Whitey is staying for now anyways

Can’t make as much profit if you actually pay people for working. Surprised we haven’t looked into volunteer players.

Bad enough being unpaid, then further down they mention working unsociable hours.

    Tight as cramp.

At the very least make it an apprenticeship and pay the crappy £3 an hour or whatever it is.

Edit: just read that it’s only for uni students or graduates. They’re actually wanting someone who has a degree in the field, with all the expense and time it took to earn it, to work for free.

This is an initiative to give real world experience to students to provide them further opportunities. Its a few hours work a week to help them with their portfolio and practical experience. Most of the interns in the last 5 years have gone on to work in the industry. One of the earlier interns is now head of the media team at the club.

I think apprenticeships are fixed term contracts, which wouldn't suit either the club or a degree student in this case.

    I may be wrong though.

Just to add a counter view over what’s been said.

I did a weeks unpaid internship when I was just out of university and it really helped to flesh up my CV.

    Apprenticeships don’t work for everyone.

Minimum wage for an 18-20 year old is £6.45 per hour.

A few hours a week, lets say 3, equates to £19.35 PER WEEK.

@Gally has beaten me to it, but anyway...

In my time at the club, we've had an intern each year. They're students at university. They come here as interns, on placement. It's part of their course to find such placements. Because it's a foot in the door, it's practical experience working alongside professionals at a high level. It's perfect in terms of learning, development, building your CV and portfolio as well as networking etc.

Of those interns in the last five or six years, one works at Sunderland now. Another for UK Athletics, one in UK Golf. And my actual boss, he was our intern in 2016.

They will attend a 23s or 18s fixture once a week, so about three hours of their time. In amongst whatever part-time job they have, and their uni work of course. They'll have the opportunity to do more should they want to. And boy would I want to, considering you're going to get a job in the sports media industry at the end of it. Should you be good enough of course.

And no, I'm going nowhere. Plenty more gas in this tank. Unless the interns force me to retire!
