I prefer Jerusalem to God Save The Queen. But either way, to me at the end of the day it is just a song as is every other countries anthem, far worse stuff happening to be worried about people booing a song. Right or wrong many other countries do the same with the anthems or whistle throughout, think it just happened to be more noticeable with it being at Wembley and obvs far more English in the ground.
We don't have a monopoly on it SB, I agree. But we're very much tarred with that brush in the eyes of many I'm afraid.
I personally think all national anthems are ****, and outdated. I've never have and never will understand countries like the USA who hold it to such esteem that it is played before EVERY event that is held there. Personally, I'd stop playing them altogether(except the Russian one, which should be played on the hour, every hour accompanied by a big ******* painted banner of Ivan Drago being raised)...
My Three'apeth... When Germany reunified in 1990, the third stanza of ‘Deutschlandlied’ was confirmed as the national anthem. The other verses, which include the lyrics ‘Deutschland, Deutschland über alles’ were dropped due to their association with Nazi Germany. The current one sung now is (in English)... Unity and justice and freedom For the German fatherland! Towards these let us all strive Brotherly with heart and hand! Unity and justice and freedom Are the foundation of happiness; Flourish in the radiance of this happiness, Flourish, German fatherland! Why would you boo those sentiments (why boo any national anthem)? I bet 99% of those who did had not a clue what the Germans were singing. The tune was originally written by Haydn and used for a hymn in England...(Glorious things of thee are spoken)
It's a shame that the German anthem gets booed - because its a proper tune. That and the Italian one are brilliant.
As much as I would never boo any countries anthem I don't think England fans boo it as a message of hatred of a countries past or even present I think it more to do with trying to intimidate the other teams players, to wind them up, to act as that 12th man, like I say I wouldn't do it and the ones booing probably don't know our own anthem, ignorant, disrespectful, absolutely, hatred, I don't think so
Ignorant and disrespectful..agreed. Hatred I probably agree with too. Asking them to come up with a justification of their hatred would probably require a greater collection of brain cells than they actually possess. It's mob stupidity.
That's why I never follow national football. Ireland are pish anyway and are no angels ourselves when it comes to playing England. Secondly that's why I'll never want England to win anything at football. Lack of class and damage they cause abroad. Singing about German bombers and plastering it all over social media. Thirdly I don't get why people act like Germany are England's biggest rivals. Its one sided from my experience with Germans. They don't care. Fourthly give me a cold day away at Reading anytime than any of these competitions
Disagree with your 3rd point about Germans not caring about us, Jurgen Klinsman said on TV that it is a big rivalry, the difference is theirs is largely about football and not the horrors of war
The main reason ze war gets brought up is because Germany have beaten us at football so many times since. It's why the Scots dress up as William Wallace and go on about Bannockburn when ever we play them. It's easy to be magnanimous about football rivalries when you're the one who's winning all the time. Wait until Wednesday have dropped in to League 2 and we'll all be more bothered about our rivalry with Huddersfield/Hull than them.
The Russian one is a fantastic bit of music but the words are generally lampoomed here, both the Communist original and the very clumsy post Soviet rewrite.
Al say it again some sad people on here that you think booing the oppositions national anthem is such a tragedy It's all part of the atmosphere and abit of banter I take it most of you lot have never been to England away games where the exact same thing is done to our national anthem
And we won! Imagine the pathetic vitriol if we’d lost! Moronic is a reasonable description of people who would talk like this about a young girl. What are we becoming?
Exactly this. I wouldn't give a monkeys if another countries fans booed our national anthem. No doubt the people who are outraged about this would support other countries booing our anthem.
