I think the key thing with Murphy is that he never did promise anything, and he never made any grandiose statements to whip up excitement with the fanbase a la 'best transfer window EVER.' I do agree though that perhaps some perceived it as false hope or done deals, but again Murphy never stated that. But it isn't great, as you allude to, that the updates came from a man who is apparently now no longer at the club, concerning one who has departed and another who is destined to follow him. But that's 21st-century football innit. I liked Murphy personally, seemed very reasonable, likeable and seemed to have the fans' best interests at heart. He always acknowledged the positive impact of fans in his updates, and the need to get them back in the ground. Just a shame it looks like he's gone.
If we'd offered him an improved contract, do you think he'd have agreed to have the 2m release clause taken out? In all likelihood he'd have took a pay rise, maybe allowed us to add an extra 500k onto the release clause, but he'd never have signed with Barnsley in the first place if he didn't think he was going on to bigger and better things. When Struber came I wondered why anyone would leave a Europa League side to come to England. The contracts earned by both him and Ismael show why. They're not coming here because they love the club, they're coming here to put themselves in the shop window and display their coaching skills to a wider audience week in and week out.
You don't know until you offer the contract. Could include bonuses for staying up and promotion to make it a more competitive package, as well as increased pay, and in return increase the buy out to 3m+. He might've turned it down, it might've been enough for him. We'll never know if we didn't try.
My biggest issue has always been the over egging of things. To be fair, it's not always easy to play a dead bat to something if you're not used to it culturally. It was also a completely new role for him and though understandable it would take someone so young and inexperienced time to get used to it, it did seem to swallow him up a bit at first. I'll be interested if we ever hear what actually happened with Murphy and his contractual situation.
Who’s to say Mowatt wouldn’t have stayed had Val stayed. All conjecture, we simply don’t know. Just because Mowatt kept his options open doesn’t mean to say he wouldn’t have eventually signed. I’ll make a scenario up, Dane, are you going to sign this new improved contract, Alex’ not just yet, I‘m not saying no, but I want to see what/ if anything comes along in the meantime, but I can assure you it will have to be substantiall as I am happy with the set-up here, but I have to consider my future. Dane, ok we’ll keep it open as long as we can, but will have to move on at some point. Meantime, Dane is said to be leaving and Val has gone. Alex to Paul Conway, sorry Paul but I have to now decline your offer and will be signing for Val at WBA. Made up by me, but just as plausible as anything else I’ve read/heard so far.
If we didn’t have a release clause he could still walk and the compensation would have been set by the EFL panel and we all know how those work out for the poorer teams ? I would say the board have done all they can to keep our coaches within our rightly set boundaries but if they do decide to walk we are subsequently compensated . Listening to some posters on here it’s like we could hold them here in chains and draw up contracts that practically enslave employees . Of course there are others who just want to bash the owners on anything and everything .
Alex has been fantastic for us. Given us four seasons which at Oakwell these days is a lifetime. At his age he would be daft not to take what amounts to a payday. For my money a more influential player than Conor H. Wishing him all the best.
If we did offer him something, then fair enough. But generally any contract offers end up being reported, so suspect we didn't.
Because he could have been on improved wages - if he had any intention of staying - from last summer, or at any point in the last year. So why wait until the end of a contract (to signa new one with that same employer) when you know you could have been making X% more than your current wage by having signed a new contract a year ago? Makes no sense. He would also always have known that more money would be on offer at another club once he was a free agent because a) the new club would likely be richer than us could, and b) could give at least some of what would have been a transfer fee to Alex himself as a signing on fee/in his wage itself. That he was always gonna leave is the most likely outcome and Dane was likely just saving face about negotiations. They probably knew he was off yonks ago.
Conjecture again, We don’t know, yet the negative is always seen as the likeliest in some people’s eyes.
It's still IF at the moment as he hasn't signed for anyone else, but it seems he's not going to renew. In that case, the stark truth is we didn't or couldn't offer enough to encourage him to stay here. I don't think there are too many surprised by that.
Almost everything on here is conjecture. I'm talking about what seems more or less likely. Why on earth would anyone forgo increased wages with a current employer to see what's 'out there' at the end of their contract and then sign a new deal with same employer for less money than is 'out there', having foregone an X% increase in their last year's wages? Who's their fecking agent? Daffy Duck?
“We are confident that we can get something done with Alex. “He’s currently on holiday but I believe when Alex gets back we’ll sit down with him and his representatives again and the club believes, I believe, Valérien believes that this is the best place for Alex Mowatt. “He’s our captain, our leader, he provides us goals and assists, he puts in the defensive shift. I don’t see a better place for him and I hope we can get something done there. “We know other clubs are interested, but we’ve been speaking to Alex about an extension for the better part of 18 to 20 months. He knows where we stand. We continue to put forward offers that should attract any player. “So hopefully, when he sits down and looks at his offers, sees the full scope, he’ll realise this is where he should be and we’ll see him lead out the team again next season" --- Dane Murphy, 28 days ago.
Ok, updated to "if we didn't try" Do you not think we should be doing more to convince people to stay? We seem to have a higher turnover of coaches than most clubs.
We have a similar turnover of coaches as the Red Bull clubs. They just have a better progression route; Youth teams to New York to Salzburg to Leipzig, all with the same philosophy. I assume eventually we'll be looking to do the same with our clubs, but it will take years to get to that stage. Coaches are a commodity just like players in modern football. We've just cottoned on to it quicker than other teams at our level.
