CLUB STATEMENT | ALEX MOWATT Club News Barnsley Football Club can confirm that captain, Alex Mowatt has now left Oakwell upon the conclusion of his contract. Continue reading on the official site...
Thanks Alex, you always did your best for us and put a shift in. Good luck with your new club unless of course you play us!
Massive loss. To be honest, can't fault him for going for the big contract, and he never made any guarantees that he would sign and also didn't force a move. The only thing that I find a bit galling about it all is that I wonder what conversations Ismael had been having with him, during the season and particularly since the season ended. Ismael asked the club to not cash in in January, they obliged. And he moves himself and takes him on a free. Doesn't sit well to be honest.
Tbf I imagine the current owners have more brass than what Patrick offered Hourihane. Wasn't Sheron on a fortune though?
Can't be fairer than that, we tried but he knew the offers that were there before the play off games. Good luck Alex.
Thanks Alex all the best for the future. Right just need to hear the Murphy departure statement and then hopefully some good news out of Oakwell cos it all feels a bit doom and gloom at the moment especially after last season. Although this was exactly what I thought would happen once we failed to capitalise on the opportunity we created last season.
he’s put some good shifts in for us and I thank him for his service! I don’t think he will leave a huge void though. It might not be a widely shared view but I just saw him as just above decent, not particularly an inspiring captain, for each good shot that went in in loads didn’t, same with his passing. For me it doesn’t have the same feeling as Redders leaving , who was a truly inspiring captain and player. I just think it will give the chance for somebody else to break through, It wouldn’t even surprise me if he doesn’t turn out to be that popular at WBA.
Nope, just damage limitation from the usual fans who would otherwise criticise them for not trying hard enough to keep him…
Sorry to see Alex go, Really enjoyed watching him the 3 seasons he actually played for us. Always gave his all and left everything out on the pitch. Thanks Alex. We move on and look forward
Can't imagine the wages of the Premier League squad was as high as we would think, not back in the 90's. We still only had ~18k crowds, and the TV money, while eye-watering for a club our size at the time, was nowhere near the levels it would eventually reach. Also, most of the squad were the lads that got us promoted, so they may have got a 25% rise(maybe?). The likes of Ward and Fjortoft would have been the highest-paid players I'd think, but again if I had to guess I'd say about £5k a week?
Agree with most of that, NYR. I see this as the chance for Kane, Palmer etc. to really step up and make that position their own.
