Morning Ian, I think your post here is the point in a nutshell. The press weave a country v country hated, which isnt really there. Yes there are some individual nut jobs, but generally we are two very alike countries who get on quite well. The football is the same, whenever there is an England V Scotland match, you can guarantee that down here, we are bombarded with 1977 flare wearing jocks swinging from the posts at Wembley. We also get Gazza being squirted in the gob at Euro 96… It’s not nice to be reminded that your rivals have done well at anything, but when Barnsley go in a run in the cup, you can guarantee the media stick on past glories, not necessarily 1912… but they do put on things like the Chelsea win 2008. It’s an inevitability. Or this year, when they showed loads of the lads from the promotion winning side. To think that it’s us fans rubbing the opposition faces in it is a bit much. I get that it’s annoying, but there would be similar press the other way if Scotland were in a similar position. Unfortunately, the Scottish can’t say 55 years of hurt…. As they haven’t had their 66 yet. I do like the banter with Scottish fans, and hope it stays at just the banter. I would likely be supporting Scotland had the roles been reversed. I hope you’re ok Ian, and get yourself a few wee drams down ya, and sleep through the next couple of days. Because win or lose….. the press is going to be full of England in a final.
Just to show that English and Scottish fans can sometimes mix, here’s what happened in Ibiza when England beat Denmark
So you're saying that irrespective of the desires of the Scottish citizens you'd delay independence because some old unelected inbred parasite likes some hills? I will never understand the bootlicking when it comes to the royals. It baffles me.
They did this in '98 against Newcastle away. I went to the other cup games but missed this one and Sky had the theme tune to the Titanic and the vocal strains of Celine Dion to boot. Was a bit OTT but also a reminder of just how long it'd been since we'd won the fa cup The Titanic film also came out the year before so it was good timing really.
You dont get where they're coming from.....William Wallace didn't die in 1305....he was viciously murdered by the current British Govt.
I don’t think so. It will be the will of the Scottish people that make that decision, not a remote unconnected politician in Westminster - Tory or Labour. You should also be around to see Ireland coming back together. Another decision that will be decided by the people of (part of) that Country.
In an ideal world that's how it would be, yes. In reality there's no mechanism for a unilateral declaration of independence within the devolution agreements. I expect they might try, but I can't see it being upheld by the UK Supreme Courts, who will be the ones to make that decision. I'm not talking about what I think it should be, I'm talking about what I think it will be realistically.
Well, we’ll see. History tells us it’s a foolish Group of Leaders that resist the will of the people. The courts? Irrelevant.
Well I have a feeling the SNP will test it in the courts before holding a unilateral independence referendum. We'll see though.
