Not sure you should get criticism for not taking a pen i didn't like Southgates defend a one goal lead tactic if that's what it was but its been a good tournament.
All heroes. Can't get my head around Saka ending up taking that penalty though. 5th pen should've been Kane or Maguire surely. Also not fair to keep mentioning Grealish and Sterling without pointing out both Stones and Shaw have taken shootout penalties before.
Sterling and Grealish are villains - because the manager decided to get a 19 year old to take a penalty before them? Aye ok.
That Tactic is a thing of the past. The thinking now is use your best takers first. If he’s 5th you could be out before he’s taken one.
Hero's Everyone thats stayed at tarn so far. Villians We finished 5th last yr Am talking about money, money, Simply red Bit of a coincidence Start singing that to there dug out wen were licking them 4 nil, coyr Dislike em na cant help it.
Sterling is rubbish at penalties - missed his last 3 for City. Southgate might have said don't bother mate.
Watching Southgate in the huddle before, I was convinced he said to Grealish he was 5th. Clearly I was wrong but perhaps he was saying thanks but you’re not in the first 5. In other words perhaps they did put themselves forward
I don't think any of the current crop of England players deserve hero status regardless of this tournament. I class Shearer, Gascoigne, Lineker, Owen, Beckham, Platt, Gerrard, Pearce, Lampard, Ince, Sheringham etc as heroes. They had gravitas. These might be lovely lads but they aren't heroes. Not to me anyway.
There’s no need for this post - I was p.issed up and disappointed when I posted it but with hindsight it’s embarrassing. Apologies.
Southgate insists the takers where his choice. We have to take his word at it. Personally Sterling, Grealish, Shaw and Stones would all have been ahead of two subs and a kid but we just don’t know the circumstances that led to that decision
They regularly practice penalties. It’s not Southgate randomly picking 5 players. The ones who took them will be the ones who are good at them in training. People are just looking for excuses.
It shouldn't be as simple as who takes the best penalties in training. There's a massive difference between sticking it in the top bins in training and doing in front of 60,000 in a final at Wembley...
