Only rule is you can't pick 96-97 or 97-98. I loved 15-16 for the story of it. Near bottom at Christmas, and I remember coming out of the ground with my uncle and making a sarcastic joke about the playoffs with my tongue firmly in cheek. Then we actually ended up there, it was ridiculous. I enjoyed 18-19 for the manner of that promotion, and really liked Stendel as manager. But 2001-02 will always be the most special for me. We got relegated, we were crap, club was in turmoil, but it was the first season my dad took me every week after I'd begged to go. The odd win we managed in that dark time made me a Barnsley fan, and I can still name the entire squad.
2015/16. An amazing story, two Wembley wins, a team that became majestic in that division. Unforgettable.
2015/16 for me. I walked out of the ground after the Everton cup game and told my Dad we'd get promoted. I stuck to that even during the 8 match losing run. Then I was saying we'll miss out on automatic but make the Play-Offs if it turns quickly. Then we signed Hammill and Long Hourihane struck in stoppage time v Sheff Utd and it spiralled from there in spite of going bottom that day. I was still confident. The squad that season was the best assembled we'd had in League 1 to that point and was massively underachieving.
99/00 was brilliant, as were the L1 promotion seasons of 05/06, 15/16 and 18/19..... But my vote goes to the 81/82 season. Holding the European Champions 0.0 at Anfield was a special night. This after knocking out 3 Top flight teams Brighton, Swansea and Man City out of the league Cup. The league season wasn't too bad either If only there had been playoffs back then, who knows what would have happened....
I enjoyed the 09/10 season under Robins. We got on a role and into Play-Off contention. It was only end of season indifference that cost us in the end.
For me it was the 1978/79 season when Clarke arrived and got us promoted, my first ever taste of success - closely followed by the 80/81 season In recent times I quite enjoyed the 2018/19 season as well
I enjoyed the middle of the 18/19 season when we were free-flowing. I didn't enjoy the run-in (a bit tense) we had a few close shaves near the end.
Im going 81/82 We were top flight quality that season. Two or three more players in the squad and we would have gone up. We had a fantastic 12 or 13 lads. Horn Joyce Chambers McCarthy Evans Glavin Banks Barrowclough Parker McHale Aylott Campbell Walker My memory isnt what it used to be but were the following also in the squad that season- Hunter himself played during an injury crisis if i remember rightly. Law left back Cooper Birch Riley Pierce back up keeper Only BFc oracle @JLWBigLil can know the answer to that.
Yep, a superb squad who responded to an equally superb manager. But it was more than that for a young teenage lad. The ground was buzzing, I mean BUZZING, long before kick off. Same faces every week, and a proper sense of community. An atmosphere that was unreal. Liverpool and Man U could still pull in 50k crowds but most other top flight teams were struggling for 20k. We were the only team bucking the trend, as evidenced by Barry Davies famous quote about something special happening in Barnsley. Football was generally on it's arse except for a small part of South Yorkshire. We identified with the players, there were no airs 'n graces. We regularly got 13k + for teams such as (not 'like') Newport in our first season in the 3rd tier. Trips to away grounds were amazing, packing out one side of the ground v Chesterfield for example on boxing day. Taking crowds of Wednesday proportions to Boro and Huddersfield. Record breaking crowds for the day for games such as Enfield and Fulham (midweek). It was quite simply amazing, and if I could do the walk from the station to the ground, taking in the buzz of the hordes, and the smell of the coal fires, and the burgers and onions as I approach the ground, just one more time, I would be a happy man. And I would never have to go home, log on to social media and get slagged off for having a different opinion to someone on the days events. Football wasn't 24/7 and it was somehow better. After a match there was Sports Report if you were quick enough to get to a wireless. Then MOTD if you wanted to stay up. Then sod all til the Sunday / Monday papers. Then we'd do it all again the following glorious Saturday. Norman went, which I still put down to a knee jerk reaction. But it was Maggie who stole those halcyon days.
my memory of that season mate was that we were organised and efficient. However, I don't associate a Mark Robins team with being a season of excitement and one to remember, sorry mate
1978/9 1980/81 1981/82 2007/8 2015/16 2018/19 And my very favourite out of them would be 81/82 although we didn’t win anything it was a truly remarkable team with some cracking performances .
